Right. I'm saying bigger device does not necessarily trend positively with less battery life. There's a ton more trade offs involved.

You can use free maps, routing is easy. Sure, the PC software could have a better interface and the OSX implementation is hampered, but it's a far cry from unusable.

I wish Garmin would revamp the 500 with the GLONASS satellite system. I like the fom factor of the 500 but I'm finding it frustratingly unreliable at times.

I am not positive about this new Garmin Edge 1000. I am not going to upgrade my Edge 800.

Although the Edge 1000 has some nice features, it is not good enough for the price they ask for it.
The two thing I like is segments but no compatibility with Strava and that is wrong in my opinion and the ability to receive text messages (but you need a phone to receive = too bad)
The Battery has not enough power and only 15 hours when you don't use the map view.

I wish there was a smartphone that is completely waterproof, ant+ compatible, shock proof, bluetooth 4.x, nice apps with segments and Strava compatibility and 24 hours power.
This will kill the edge 1000 easily. Maybe the new Samsung Galaxy S5? It is already water proof.

All Edge 1000’s will get not only the usual bag of rubber quarter-turn mounts for your handlebars, but also the out-front mount

You can still upload as usual to strava with the 1000 but minus the fancy features you get if you upload to GC.

Its a bit like Sony marketing a camera to be used for vimeo instead of youtube. EPIC FAIL!

It's got to be the size of the antenna in the 500 that's the problem. My 800's GPS was fantastic compared to my 500 and they're supposed to use the same chip.

The USB port on my 800 died so I grabbed a 510. In a lot of ways, it feels like a downgrade. Has already crashed a couple of times and I'm not stoked on the interface.

The Edge 800 was a great bikecomputer when it came on the market. The 810 and the 1000 are more upgrades but nothing stunning in my opinion.
A brand that will enter the market with a compact sport smartphone for 500 dollar with ant+, bluetooth 4.x and some good apps (segments, gps, etc.) and good battery have a winner on there hands.

A smartphone is out of the question for a reason I already explained: a capacitive screen is less than ideal when it rains (and good luck if you wear winter gloves.

It's only a winner for those who are afraid to do real riding
