Hey all. I know NOTHING about headsets and have tried to do a little research, but still not understanding what my best options would be. I'm making a spreadsheet on current pieces with weight vs items I'm interested in to help knock off a couple more grams. Ive looked at Fairwheel headsets, but they all look different from what I see in the picture below.

I have a 2012 supersix with stock headset/Evo expander and conical spacer:

Is it worth swapping out the upper/lower bearings and wedges to save weight? If so, can you make some suggestions on some durable yet light weight choices?

I am sure one of the FSA headsets fit the Cannondale SuperSix, but I don't know which one. Could it be their No.42/48ACB?

Isn't this already an FSA headset?

I assume it uses the same headset as the CAAD10, which I have. It looks identical. I looked around and other bearings were around the same weight, so I kept them and I replaced the cone spacer with a very short carbon one and I replaced the heavy expander with an Extralite Ultrastar 2 and a Tune top cap and aluminum bolt. A lot lighter setup.

You can see all the weights here:

Get this.

http://www.cannondaleexperts.com/Cannon ... p_106.html

It will shave quite a few grams off the standard compression wedge, and is a Cannondale product. I use one, and have had zero problems with it, as do all my friends riding Evos and CAAD10s

You have the lightest compression wedge available, so you will only be able to lose weight on the other components in the headset.

These are;

Two bearings. About 20g each
Locking wedge ring. About 2g.
Top bearing cover. About 2g
Spacers. 3g each
Conical spacer. 17g

Even if you were running the large conical spacer, and say 4 x 5mm spacers, that would be a total weight of about 73g

Totally removing these components will save you 73g off your bike. You can not physically do that and still ride it, so it will be a case of replacing them.

At best, you are going to be able to omit the conical spacer, and all of the 5mm spacers, which will save you 29g.

If you then find some lighter bearings, which weigh, say, 10g each, that will be another 20g you will lose.

Total loss; 49g.

49g

For all that effort.

Did you know this is weightweenies?

Althoug I have to agree in this case, the headsetbearings is the last place to loose weight...

Exactly, the entire point of this site. But I don't think lighter bearings exist. I've looked around, but I could be wrong.

The lightest setup that I've managed to put together is:

Stock bearings & wedges: 59g
8mm Carbon bearing cap/spacer: 6g - savings of 11g
Extralite Ultrastar 2 Expander: 7g - savings of 23g
Tune Carbon Cap & Aluminum Bolt: 5g - savings of 15g

This setup saves a total of 49g over stock.

The topcap in your picture is the old Cannondale topcap- thats what came on my Supersix Evo. Around 38 grams. The topcap in the link is the new Cannondale topcap - 15 grams. $20 at my LBS..

Can't help you on the bearings - haven't found any lighter ones.
