If Katie Compton and Jeremy Powers ride worlds like they rode nationals I think we will see American riders on both the elite men's and women's worlds podium for the first time ever. I really hope Katie can put it all together and finally win at worlds. But I see Vos riding all the time and she looks virtually unbeatable... especially with worlds in her home country. I haven seen Powers in Europe this year so it will be interesting to see. He raced nationals like the Belgians race.

Because it is unclear from the clip if that was from during the race or after. If it was during, it looks like cadel was giving away a win. If it is after, it looks like a congratulatory handshake. I was curious what I was looking at.

In what professional race, or even amauteur racem would someone ever give the race away and go to shake hands before the finish line?

He wasn't. I think usac (or ill assume) provides money the national jersey holder as Jonathan page was in Europe this year.

USAC doesn't provide any money to race in Europe for the US Champion. Page was actually struggling with sponsors before he won last year. The difference is Page has aspired to race in Europe and be more than a big fish in a little pond. Which is no slight on the racing in America, its just the racing isn't to the calibre of that in the European races.

It sounds like Rapha-Focus are stepping up next season though and supporting Powers for a full season in Europe though. I think he is still far off from podiuming at the worlds though

yea fair enough.

seems like an obvious statement, but the cx racing in europe would appear to be a level or two above domestic racing in the states.

Powers has no chance of hitting the top 10 at worlds.

No disrespect to us crossers but EU and US mens CX are two completely different things.

I tried to watch both mens and womens races yesterday but I couldn't after the first lap even with Towle on mute. I've been spoiled as Sportsnet is now broadcasting the WC races here in Canada and the speed, tactics, and entertainment value is amazing. You often see groups of 10 coming into the last lap together with no idea who is going to win. Maybe the US Nats course is partly to blame but both mens and womens races were super boring and reminded me of Jr. MTB races.

If you're "giving away the win" you don't shake hands until the bank transfer goes through.

US cyclocross has come pretty far in 5 years, even more so in 2 years. I think it'll be another 5 before you could compare it to the Euro cross scene. Maybe even 2...who knows. However, cross is still stupid. :P   and Towle commentating only makes it THAT much worse. I wish I could race with earplugs when he is commentating a race I'm in. :?
