I've been thinking about that and I don't doubt one bit that Yonex are undoubtedly experts in using carbon fiber composites. However, I'm not so sure how golf clubs or tennis racquets translate to cycling. I mean just because you know composites doesn't mean you can build a great bike. There's a lot more to it than just making a pretty frame out of carbon. I don't doubt that Yonex is capable of making a great frame one day, I'll just be surprised if they can do it on the first try...

Lots of R&D go into designing golf clubs. Yonex having superior carbon fiber knowledge and solid R&D will result in a good product. It will be interesting to see how good and how long it takes.

Can someone do a better translation than Google on this?

They pack in a lot of buzzwords
nanosciience, nanotechnology, X-Fullerenes, "Oval Pressed Shaft (OPS) Theory"
"moderately to vibration while maintaining the rigidity" - I guess this is a high tech version of laterally stiff while vertically compliant.

http://www.tennisexpress.com/yonex-ops wrote:OPS (Oval Pressed Shaft)

Shaft corners are rounded off for a more ideal flex, and also widens the shaft face for increased stability, producing a longer dwell time (time ball spends on the string face) for increased spin and control.
http://www.tennisexpress.com/info/yonex-x-fullerene-technology.cfm wrote:X-Fullerene Technology

X-Fullerene provides more repulsion power and frame stability than Fullerene

Using a crosslinked network of carbon spheres compared to standard graphite sheets in the sides of the frame improves the internal strength of the frame. The stiffer sides of the frame help to increase ball speed for more power as well as increase torsional stability.

They also make really nice badminton rackets. I used to play badminton bad in the 80s and totally forgot how you already back then carbon took over from alu. Crazy they have not tried to capitalize on their many years of experience sooner. 650g and the bikes looks really nice. Can't wait to hear more.

I translated the important parts of that page:

A New Entry to the Sports Cycling Business - Ultra Light-Weight Carbon Bike Frame “Carbonex/CARBONEX” To Launch in April 2014

Artist's impression of complete bike (not actual complete bike)

Yonex K.K. (HQ: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, President: Mr. Tsutomu Yoneyama) commences the development, manufacture and sale of a carbon road bike frame set as a new entry into the sports cycling business. Our first effort will be the sale of the “Carbonex/CARBONEX” high-end model road bike frame in April 2014.

Yonex was the first to use carbon as a material in sporting goods, developing products such as badminton rackets, tennis rackets, golf clubs and snow boards that make full use of the strength and weight characteristics of carbon…. etc. etc. boring guff

Product Outline - Challenging For The Lightest Weight! Ultralight 650 g Frame

The biggest feature of “CARBONEX” is the ultralight 650 g frame that incorporates 40 years of materials research and carbon technology at Yonex. The name “CARBONEX” was the product name used for the first carbon rackets and golf clubs produced by Yonex, and represents the origin of Yonex’s carbon technology.

Intending for CARBONEX to be “the world’s lightest road bike”, Yonex has utilised materials that incorporate nanotechnology such as “X-Fullerene” to reduce weight while maintaining strength and rigidity, “Rubber Metal®*” titanium alloys with superior, rubber-like formability and elasticity, and frame shapes that deliver maximum frame function such as “Box Form” and “Exactly Circular Form”. Furthermore, by utilising Yonex’s unique Oval Pressed Shaft (O.P.S.) concept, we have improved road feel (?) providing an appropriate degree of compliance with vibration while maintaining rigidity. With these technologies and new materials, Yonex has created an all-carbon road bike frame combining characteristics of rigidity, durability and comfort while also being extremely light.

*”Rubber Metal” is a new material developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, and is an unbelievable new titanium alloy that combines “low elastic modulus” with “high strength” in a way thought heretofore impossible in metals.

Left frame:
Seat stay: Flat-sided seat stays
Top tube: Box shape
BB: something like “Base Connectivity”
Down tube: Exactly circular shape
Head tube: “Base Connectivity” again
Carbon Technology Used in Frame

Right frame:
X-Fullerene used over the entire frame (big yellow circle)
“Rubber Metal” (two small circles)
O.P.S. (one small circle)
Main Materials/Shapes Used in Frame

Product name CARBONEX
Colour Black/Orange
Size “All-round type” XS, S, M (one frame type in three sizes)
On sale from April 2014
Intended for Road race riders, general advanced riders
Recommended retail price 400,000 yen + tax
Made in Japan

With an ipump, that would be only 671 grams. And if not, I'll eat my bike.
