Hello,

I found a nice 2nd hand CAAD10 in 63 cm to replace my old roadbike.
The 2011 model has in my opinion one of the best color schemes!
My intention is to exchange parts in order to reach the UCI limit (6.8 kg) or lower,
I would like to keep the upgrade budget "reasonable". (< 1000 Euro)
My first step was to get planet X brakes, 245 gr a set (for 40 euro) and exustar Keo pedals 252 gr (33 euro)
I am looking to replace stem/handlebar/seatpost saddle, etc.

CAAD10-2011.JPG

First ideas are:
Soul 2.0 wheelset (1300g) for ~440 euro
KCNC seatpost (145 gr) ~70 Euro
KCNC handlebar 44 cm (210 gr) ~70 Euro
chinese carbon saddle ?

The ultegra shifters are heavy, I would like to replace those with campagnolo chorus of sram force or red (even lighter!)
(btw. I' m 1.93m tall / 83 kg)

Any suggestions or comments are welcome!

I think the frame will weight a bit more since my 54 weighted 1240...

You already mentioned the most easy places to save weight.
I would suggest the fork and saddle are also easy parts to save some weight.

Hollowgram cranks & Reynolds 32 tubulars would probably get you there pretty quickly. You can usually find both used for a reasonable price on eBay. If you insist on clinchers (as I do) the Soul wheels are a good bet.

Hi Joop,

Great to see you lightening your bike. One thing to take into account is that a setback seatpost (the one that currently resides on your CAAD) will probably place you better over your bike and will also probably give you a better KOPS (Knee Over Pedal Spindle). A measurement to check if you are rightly positioned on your bike. Thus, the KCNC post that you showed might not be the perfect marriage for you and your bike.

One thing that could save you a lot of weight fast would by by swapping the fork. This fork probably has an alloy steerer.
The cranks might also be something to look at. Lighter BB30 cranks are available
As you might have seen (this is an open door) the wheels are a bit of pigs. those could be swapped out if you would like as well.

Good luck!

(btw, I guess you are from Holland. where do you live?)

Yes, I am from the Netherlands, Delft.
thanks, I will check on my KOPS-position
Wheels are on the list to be exchanged, I want clinchers, choosing between :
Soul S2.0 1300 gr (maybe not suited for everyday use?)
Soul S3.0 1550 gr ("more durable", according to Sean of Soul)

Campagnolo's might be good alternatives for the Soul S3.0 :
Neutron Ultra: 1490 gr
Zonda: 1550 gr
The neutrons are twice the price of the Zonda's and weight difference is relatively small.
I'm leaning towards a set of Zondas. (although I prefer the look of the Neutrons)

In the mean time, a set of planet X Ti-skewers (41 gr) came in, the original ones were 123 gr !
(80 gr saved for only 23,- euro)

Crank upgrades seem to be quite pricey, but maybe I can win something by replacing the chainwheels?

Its coming along nicely, i wouldn't bother with just changing the chainrings Gram/Euro wise.

For cheap and easy weight savings you can try to find a cheap and worn selle Italia SLR saddle en then strip the leather deck and foam which gives you a saddle which weighs around 110 grams, i got 1 for 15 euro cheapest savings ever.

further tyres and tubes can save +100 grams easily with going to gp4000s and Vredestein latex innertubes and are transferrable to a new wheelset in the future.
doing those 2 things alone would give you a 260grams saving for around 80 to 90 euro's depending on how well you shop woud giva a 3 grams saved for every Euro and the tyres and tubes are a real upgrade in terms of comfort and rolling resistance without sacrificing puncture resistance.

Finally got my wheels, a hand-build set Kinlin XR270 rims and hope pro3 (24/28)
weight: 1530 g
Managed to install the campagnolo chain with a KMC missing link.
So today I could make the first tour my my campagnolo-CAAD!

Nice build, I'm building a CAAD10 myself. Great frame. I think your scale might be off, because I have the Planet-X brakes as well, and mine came in at 212g. Others have weight close to that as well.

I think there are 2 versions of the planetX brakes, CNC, spec 205g and a forged version: spec 225 g at half the price of the CNC brake.

Btw. I'm still looking for a lighter headset expander, at a reasonable price.
I want to replace that heavy c'dale aluminium weight. (50 g on my scale).

And i can cut a piece of my seatpost, to loose some more weight.

Ah ok, you got the other brakes.

For the expander, I got an Extralite Ultrastar 2. Only 7g.

For the expanded plug just get the new cdale evo expander. You can get it at cannondaleexperts.com. its $32 I think. 12g. I have one in my Supersix and it works great.
