Agree completely, Valverde screwed the tactics up big time at the end. As good as it is he didn't, it's still hard to believe that Spain had 2 riders in a 4 man break and couldn't take the win....

Seeing as Rui Costa rides for Lampre next season I highly doubt that pro-team loyalty was in the question.

Don't think Valverde did it on purpose. He's just tactically stupid when it comes to things like this. Rui Costa was clearly a bigger threat than Nibali at the end, but Valverde was still content with sitting on Nibali's wheel. Nibali's terribly slow turn when Rui Costa got away played it's part as well. That's what enabled Rui Costa to get away clean and chase down Purito on his own.

I think Valverde is used to ride like the captain of the team. Remember how Purito used to drag him along in the Caisse d'Épargne days.
Valverde owed him more than what he gave today.

Just speculating. Other strong riders seemed to finish just fine.

Quote of the day from Chris Boardman on the BBC coverage

"Well, clearly the conditions didn't favour the GB riders today"

WFT? Chris, if today's weather should favour anyone, it should be someone from our fair isle. ;)

Same can be said of the Irish guys, perhaps even more so.

Too much time in Tenerife and the South of France.

Yeah.

Nibabli tasted the tarmac, chased back on - sorry, got pushed back on by the magic spanner - and still never gave up.

I thought Wiggins got too much stick from the Giro, but today was just pathetic. Cav was the only one of the GB riders who can hold their head high tonight.

Disappointed with the favorites that never showed or even animated the race! All of the favorites had been regarded as "Classic Specialists" with the likes of Gilbert,Sagan,Cancellara. Cancellara had so much hype going into this race and didn't show anything. I thought with his form in the Vuelta that this race was his to lose. On another note how about Uran's crash!

Twice. I caught the first hour of the race and he was chasing back on with teammates, on a replacement bike, while drafting a team car. Camera was on him behind the car for what felt like a long time before it cut away.

The race was simply too tough for them. Most people thought that the classic guys would be able to follow, but that simply wasn't the case. I wouldn't blame them too much. The climbers excelled today.

Interesting post a local rider made about Horner's bio passport data: http://bikerackheads.blogspot.com/2013/ ... gical.html

I could see Horner getting nabbed in the next 6 months.

Seems silly that Horner would release is data if it were as damning as the author makes it appear. I read a hint of bias into some of his comments. Not at all saying Horner is 100% clean, but that article should certainly be taken with a rather large grain of salt.
