Hi ten vs aluminium parts, lowering weight
Moderator: Moderator Team
Hi . This is my first topic and my nightmare too.
I have cheap Hi ten bicycle with almost all steel components (only wheels are aluminium, best ones on market, kryptonit x made by capriolo, they are maybe one of strongest wheels)
i dont haave money to spend on good alloy bicycle but i have some for new parts.
I want to replace my stem, handlebar and seatpost with aluminium ones ( maybe few other things, but for now only this)
So my question is, how much weight could i loose from bicycle ( 200 g, 300g,...)
Please help , i am googling for a month now and i cant find any article about it....

Take each part off, weight it, look online and see what a decent alloy part will weigh - simples.
Steel parts are dreadfully heavy you could easily be saving 200-300g per component.
My younger daughters first bike had a steel seatpost for a while, I chopped it to minimum length and saved over 100g by cutting off about 100mm

thanks. i saw that my handlebar have ~420g and aluminium ones are ~ 200g
also i thing that my seatpost is pretty heavy because its from 2 parts ( pipe and other thing which tights saddle) so i could also drop 200 g
and stem also....
next upgrade are tires, i want some light but durable tires ( this old ones are chinese inertube and chezch outer,... they are great ( 0 puncture) but i destroyed them braking)
oh yes and braking, i have some crappy front disc brake so i will change it to avid sd3 or better ( my disk brakes are 500g and vbrake avid is 210 each )
i think i could save 1kg for under 50 $

Ally bars are more likely to be 230-250g.
You can get aluminimum posts that still take the steel mountings on top, works out cheaper and often lighter than a full new ally post, I have a Zoom one that came off a bike I bought, at 240g it's not a bad weight at all (it's on my town hack bike).
Tyre will liley be a big saving, cheap tyres are circa 1Kg, decent ones 600g or less, likewide a decent tube can be 150g while a cheap opne 230g.
