Temporarily using a winter bike for CX
Moderator: Moderator Team
So I have a winter bike with decent clearance, however it has standard road brake mounts. Are there any brakes that I can use with this frame that would be suitable for use with CX tyres? Or are there any other options?

You are unlikely to find a deep and wide enough calliper to fit round any decent sized cross tyre.
Even if you do, the instant it gets muddy, your wheels are likely to jam.
Tho I have seen some one race a couple of laps of a cross race on their Road bike when they flatted on their cx. Think they had 28mm file tread on the road bike. It was bone dry and grippy as hell tho.

That's cantilever (26") to cantilever (700c).
You can use one as a lash up to fit cantis to a caliper frame. Bit of drilling, couple or three jubilee clips on each end, and then you are set. I've seen it done before.
Then you still aren't likely to have enough clearance to the frame. Especially behind the bottom bracket. Unless you use the tiniest cross tyres you can find.

My alu CX frame was €79 (new) on Ebay. Couldn't you just get such a thing and put the parts on it? You need to buy Cantis, of course, but they don't cost the world either.

You should really have been looking in March!
There won't be much around now, not until after the three peaks. And even then it'll only be a handful.
Best way might be a cheap new frame, Paul Milnes is as good a place as any to start.
