Nice Alan,
I'm currently stripping my Prolite Cuneo (going for the raw finish maybe with a moots style logo) might start a thread on it...

Wouldn't it have been faster (and cheaper) to take it to a professional to have it media blasted, then finished the way you want, assuming there is a service in your area?

I calculated the cost & time to strip a frame I have and it worked out to come out basically even between DIY and handing it to a professional, only the professional would guarantee a perfect job.

i raced criteriums with one of these early 80's

flexible as hell, but turned cobbles into tarmac and because of that, great in the wet through the many, many corners

i now regret having sold it (as some other bikes i owned during my first cycling career)

oh yes it's much faster and easier (not cheaper unfortunately) but where's the fun it that? ;)
I'm not looking to do much to the finish of the aluminum though I want it just how it was before the paint went on, but blasting cause a slight polishing.

Having had my Cuneo blasted and more recently having sanded a carbon frame/fork by hand, I'd say that blasting is the way to go. You can better spend your time on assembly and tuning. I found a deal when I lived in Georgia, USA - US$85 for blasting + single color powdercoat. Good luck either way!

just bought this dedacciai-frame with a cannondale-fork. its a real weight weenie: frame weighs 1201 gramm, with all screws, integrated headset-cups, adjusting-screws for the shift cables, replaceable derailleur-hanger. frameset with "everything" ca 1570 gramm.
