Hey guys, never really gotten a straight answer here on this question.

Would you guys consider a set of 7850 c24's strong enough for a race wheel-set for cross?

:beerchug:

Thanks for the info.

I would. Shimano pride themselves on durability, and if their carbon wheels are good enough for so many world champs, I'd say the alloys are fine too.

The aluminum clincher? I wouldn't be worried about strength, but that thin braking surface won't last long.

A buddy of mine swears by them, stiff and supremely robust according to him.

I've raced a whole season on RS80s with no issue, I'm 85kgs and not very easy on my equipment.

I have only seen shattered c35's due braking too hard. Alloy wheels are hard to break so should really be a problem.
You could also consider dura-ace hubs with mavic open pro rims. Should be around the same price but a bit more solid.

There are 2 versions of the c24.
The tu version (full carbon and for tubes) is good for cross. The clincher also but the backing surface won't last long.

Actually there are 3 versions. Tubular (tu), tubeless (tl) and normal clincher (cl)

They are a fairly standard sized Road rim, so you'll be fine up to 33mm (Max size for cx).

Nice... too bad I have the DA 7800 wheelset... Max is only 28 for this one. :(

No it's not.
That's just what shimano tell you.

Almost the entire field of any cx race will be running tyres wider than that on rims that size, or narrower.
Only issue is if you are trying to run wide tyres at road pressures.

I've done ~10 seasons on open pro. With their 16(?) mm internal width and tyres up to 38mm. No issues.
Keep the pressures sensible, 40 psi or less, and you'll be just fine.

You could probably even go tubeless without breaking sweat.
