I do love my FarSports clinchers. A lot.
That being said: suppose the Tune clinchers have the new aero shape (they are certainly wider... which is the trend). On the open-mold side of things, the best aero shape/clincher/weight that we're seeing may be coming from Light-Bicycle: 45mm, 450g (which appears to be much like a ZIPP FC profile). Rough estimate of a 20/24 build with those, using Tune Hubs and CX-Ray, all alloy nipples but no veloplugs since it's tubeless ready:
$570+85shipping for the whole wheelset rims from Light-Bicycle, 900g (estimated) (I couldn't find a price on the rims alone, so assume buy the wheelset, rebuild with rims)
$300 Mig 45 front, 50g
$410 Mag 170 rear, 170g
$129.80 for 44 black cx-ray spokes from BHS, 198g
$15.84 for 44 12mm 14G black alloy nipples, 13.64g
You're looking at a total of $1510.64 for a 1331.64g wheelset. You could even make it a lot more budget-conscious if you're willing to give up 40g by switching to a combo of BHS hubs, in the end saving you $560 off the cost and bringing the weight up to 1370g. So then it's $1010 for 1370g, and you even have a whole extra set of hubs, nipples and spokes to build another wheel with - coming off of the original Light-Bicycle purchase). Imagine however the cost of the Light-Bicycle rims are $270, which would be an accurate guess based off of other rim-only estimates from their competitors. Then we're at $710 for 1370g. Which is really great.
The comparison is assuming the Tune profile is really aero, not just deep, since it apparently has width. At the moment there is no cost announced for the Tune wheelset, but we can assume it's well over $1500USD. Well, well over. It might be in the $3000 range, really. Those rims must be really nice?
On the other hand, the Tune weighs less, and that's what is important here.
This isn't an apples-to-oranges comparison, and certainly it's just different flavors of apples and there is certainly really really high quality with Tune products... but, on the other hand, this post here does point out a serious issue going on in the industry
and not all of us are affluent.
