I think that Horner's performance on the last stage isn't too crazy when you look at what follows - a rest day and ITT.

Even though the ITT isn't likely to be too bad for Horner compared with with a pancake flat course along the coast, I image he decided to go for it on stage 10 knowing he'd have a day to recover and probably needed to gain some time before the ITT.

I don't consider rural redneck. At least not what's in Oregon, and not in Bend. Some of the more obscure corners, nearer Nevada or Idaho? Sure, maybe.
I guess we have different standards or definitions of what is a redneck and what isn't? Maybe the line where I define a redneck is a bit further out than where you're placing it.

Horner isn't a redneck, that's for sure. Oregon man, yes. Redneck, no. Not even close.

That said, Wikipedia lists him at 5'11" (1.80m).

Bend is primarily a mix of mountaineers/granolas and hipsters (in downtown, anyway). Redmond, to the north, is definitely redneck.

I work up in Oregon's hat; about an hour north of Portland and 45 minutes from the coast. I have never encountered hillbillies like these before. Not in the middle of the Mojave desert nor in Texas, California, Colorado, or Idaho. Strange (in)breed...
