Any foods that make your performance tank

So I've been thinking recently, do any of you guys notice certain foods have a detrimental effect on performance, either training or racing wise?

Personally, I don't really have any dairy in my diet, not for any particular reason, it's just the foods that I like tend not to have dairy in them. Occasionally, I'll have a massive binge on either chocolate or cereal (don't ask) and for a few days after, my performance is just sub par.

Is it all in my head or has anyone else noticed anything similar.

At the risk or derailling the thread: alcohol.
I'm in my forties, and I've noticed in the last year or 2 that my riding suffers the day after having "only" 5 or 6 beers; and that's with no hangover and getting plenty of sleep.

Well, alcohol is a nutrient :D

Any time I've had pizza (which now, is very rare) I've never had a great following day on the bike.

Just me. I'm sure others race like a Ninja Turtle after it.


Alcohol would certainly be another.

I seem to notice differences between the type of alcohol as well ie beer vs spirits, beer being more detrimental.

TP, could it be the cheese (dairy) on the pizza, or do other dairy products have no ill effect

Now in my thirties, it's been for a few years that I'm not sleeping very well when eating a big dinner late in the evening. Not strictly about the type of food though, more the amount and the time of ingestion.

Same here, or anything with delli, or a mix of meat and melted cheese in it.

Even my "pizza days", I have to plan (prior to rest or easy days :lol: ) !!!

A lunch of Thai or Indian food never ends with a good evening ride for me.......

My thought would be that it wouldn't be a matter of what type of food, but the frequency of which you indulge. If your body is used to a lot of dairy I would think it would have little effect on performance to eat a pizza a few hours pre-ride; however, if you never eat dairy and suddenly slam a 4 cheese pizza, I would hasten to guess your body would have to do a bit more work in the digestion process.

I don't think it's the food per se, but there are certain salty/savory things like chips or Chinese food that basically make me forget to hydrate. It usually rears on me 10 miles into a ride.

all you can eat korean BBQ. But i usually plan those nights prior to an off day.
