Same here, Venges need deep wheels. Otherwise what's the point? :D

Fantastic build though - I love all the red accents. I have seen a lot of versions of this bike but this one looks very sharp.

I take the point of all those people stating that the bike would look better with deeper wheels. However, Specialized themselves don't seem to agree, fitting their top tier Venge models with 404's or Roval CLX 60's as standard kit.

I have little desire to spend even more cash on yet *another* set of wheels! These'll do for me!

Great bike and nice review.

I think a Venge will be my next race bike (no lightweight mountain goat here!)

What a bike is equipped with has little to do with what is the best setup and more to do with what deal Spec had/has with OEM on pricing. That isn't Spec agreeing with anything. That is business. Even Mark Cote, who was one of lead designers of your bike, would agree with 808 FC being the faster wheel. From an aesthetics viewpoint, with your massive frame the 808s would go a long way in helping the looks and help fill out the frame more. But I can understand if you don't have the cash to buy a brand new set of race wheels now. Was just stating my opinion that I think it would help out. Regardless you have a great bike. Enjoy it.

53x12 - don't confuse a lack of desire to buy something with an inability to buy something :) Frankly, I dislike riding deep section wheels and aesthetically I think the Venge looks better with the 404s (in the flesh they're actually quite balanced - I've seen Venges with 808s and they just end up looking like some weird TT aero hybrid).

You're quite right - the 808s would undoubtedly be the faster pick. But this bike is more a bit of frivolity for me - I don't normally ride this type of thing and simply wanted to see how 'the other half lived' if you know what I mean! I don't race it with any serious intent and I probably never will, so absolute speed isn't particularly important to me.

And here I was thinking they knew what they were doing! Silly me. Thanks for the business lesson

My Venge rolling on 46mm Reynolds.
Not deep dish, but aero enough.
