Make sure your cable doesn't have too much tension in it.

yep. tension and junk can do it. should "develope" that problem though. I would read run the front mech cable. free it completely, operate the lever a few times to get any junk out and then run a new cable.

i'm having a slightly different issue. i have the 2013 levers - and the paddle on my left shifter seems loose. lots of play. it wiggles everywhere. seems sloppy. 'zero loss' doesn't seem very accurate in my case as i have to throw the leaver quite far to shift to the big ring. down shifting is no prob. is there a way to tighten it up?

Zero-loss means that the paddle starts moving the derailleur with no dead space. You still have to move it all the way over to get a full upshift, but you have no "dead movement" like on Shimano, Campy, and lower Sram components where you can wiggle the paddle without affecting the cable/derailleur at all.

If you are able to move your left paddle while the chain is in the small ring, and you can do it without getting any resistance or moving the cable, something is VERY wrong.

I hate it when I cannot repeat the issue when home. This is quite annoying and happens more often than not...
