I have a Santa Cruz Stigmata that I absolutely love. This bike will be more than just my CX racer as I also plan on using it for most of my training needs. The bike came equipped with Sram CX-1 and I upgraded to the Enve M50 wheels. I would like to add a power meter to my set up and I would like to hear what you folks would recommend. This my current short list:

1. Switch the rear DT350 hub to a powertap. I have a PT on my road bike and it has been consistent and reliable.
2. Power2max but they currently don't have a single ring option with a 110 BCD
3. Stages carbon left crank arm. At this price point I think I can do better than left only power reading.

All these options have a similar price point. Is there anything else I should consider?

I have a Stages aluminium FSA SLK crank. I'm happy with it although they had to send me another new one after some battery issues last January. It could have been my fault after washing it with water pressure, I'm sure that was the problem, but they sent me another one very quickly without any problem.

Despite some drops when battery life is ending or when a new app update is available and I don't download it, I can say it's a good purchase, and their customer service is the best I've ever seen.

How about a power2max Type S, with the single chainring on the inside?
Would it cause any major issue with the chainline?

I would get a 110mm Quarq and just use one ring.
Stages is terrible- I had one on my cross bike for a while.
So inaccurate- jumps all over the place. Not stable at all. Tons of dropouts- yes you can do better.

Not had any drop outs from my Stages and it has been consistent. However, I am on my THIRD one and the current one is kept indoors in warm and dry conditions only getting wet when I am CX'ing. They are great at replacing cranks with any problems but I don't know anyone in my cycling club that has not had the dreaded battery issues with them. I don't think I would get another one, partly because of the battery issues and partly now that I am training with power I would kind of like as accurate a figure as possible. What about 4iii? Can't you send your preferred chainset to them and they can retro fit it?

I've been riding my Stages Hollowgram for two plus years now. No problems. Sees use in all weather, to include XC races.

I've run my Stages on my road bike with an SRM on the drive side.

Done with same with my HT with an SRM.

The variance between them was so small that I consider it insignificant.

I've tried stages and powertap (SL+)

Stages: just does not work.
Poweratap: very reliable, although not without minor maintenance issues.

Great conversation and I thank you all for your input. I was wrong about the power2max. They do make a power meter that will fit on my CX1 crank. I am now trying to decide between the S type, which has an attractive price, or spend more for the NG.

@LeDuke you must be one the few who has been lucky then :|
when you see the numbers of return , defects , lost of power, issues with the rain etc

It's in french but it's very serious test by a trainer who do rolling resistance test
and uses and train his clients with power meters for 10 years at least
Sky doesn't even use the version available to the public
And Fred Grappe , the trainer for FDJ who has written some very interesting studies about cycling came to the same conclusion it suck if you want to do serious training

Will they both fit? For some reason I thought the cx1 cranks had the new style "power ready" spider.
