Crashed hard the other day. The fall force was pretty much equally distributed to my head, elbow, shoulder, hip and knee. While I did end up with a fractured pelvis (inferior ramus, so not such a big deal), I was really surprised that there was no bone damage to my shoulder. I attribute this to the extra bit of muscle as a result of the winter workouts, so at least I got that going for me.
Oh, Giro has a nice crash replacement policy.
