A light bike doesn't replace good fitness.

Well, 3 months or so after my last post, I'm still dealing with an irritated knee. I finally did get an MRI scan, and it came up empty for an irritated plica. They did however find a bakers cyste, which is there for a reason. The doctor I spoke to after the MRI, told me that I had 3 options:

1. A 10 day pill diet, where I had to take 600 mg of ibuprofen, 3 times a day. This was to remove the irritation in the knee joint and hopefully help me get rid of the annoyed feeling in my knee.

2. A cortisone shot. Would keep me off the bike for 1 month(not really sure about that one). Again to remove the irritation in the knee.

3. Surgery. Remove the plica, and be out for almost 3 months.

I started with the first option, because it was the easiest. If the pills could help, I would soon be back again. Unfortunately I didn't feel any changes after the 10 days, and after a couple of rides I can still feel the "band" snap under my skin.

I'm leaning towards going straight to the surgery. This season is already over for me since there's no chance that I'll be able to gain the level of fitness now for the rest of the season. If by some miracle my knee would be 100% tomorrow, I would definately be able to ride the 2nd part of the season(August-September), but I don't see it happening. So hopefully the doctor will give some good advice on what to do. I've read mixed experiences from people who have had plica surgery, but then again, it's mostly people that have had the bad experiences that seem to share them, as they are still troubled by it. So I guess/hope the succes rate is high.

As it is right now it's almost 6 months since I first experienced the issues with my knee, and so it's been 6 months since I've been able to train 100%. I've been able to maintain a decent form, but nowhere my ambitions for this season. Mentally I'm focused on getting my knee fixed, and then be able to improve my form for next season. 2015 is not going to happen. I've read that the pros usually are up and running after 2-4 weeks - how, I have no idea of.

So, has anybody been through plica surgery with positive results?

I think my problem is now fixed. I had a rx and my doctor found a little femur discrepancy(my left femur is about 9 mm longer than my right one). The problem started when I focused on training only cycling(and with a high saddle, I measured it badly, it was 5 cm over my recommended height), leaving swimming and running (I had a muscle imbalance,glutes,ITB...)
Now I keep on training cycling with my bike adjusted correctly and started to running and swimming in order to add some strenght to my core.

Hope my experience could help someone

hope this helps http://www.patient.co.uk/health/bakers-cyst-leaflet

I have had a bakers cycst but it went away on its own after a few weeks "3". I did have a tight feeling for a while.
Its fine now and I am a lot more aware of those sensations around my knee.

Sometimes things can heal by themselves with time

I know its a pain " no pun intended" but it will work out ok. Good Luck.
