An another interesting article about the role of the brain in performance:-

http://www.runnersworld.com/race-traini ... cle?page=1

I have seen similar about increasing theta brainwaves and getting "in the zone" being used for a wide range of applications.

Try this on the next (indoor!) intervals. Block or tape up all data except time. Focus on that, and that alone. Watch every single second tick by. No other distractions, no music, no screen. Do this for a couple of sessions and then try it "normally".

Report findings :)

Only had a skim read and will read in full later but isn't this just the Noakes Central governor effect/theory?
Your brain can't tell you to quit if it's not sure how hard you're working.

Thanks, that what an interesting read.

At the moment I'm trying to get rid of the sympthoms of Pfeiffer's disease.
Personally, I think that my fatigue problem is mainly mental (blood values are perfectly fine).
I therefore see overcoming these fatigue problems as mental training.
So I am avidly waiting for next season to see the results ;)

Interesting indeed.
Anyway I can't help thinking this might have to do whether people are "wired" for racing or not. Some always excel in a competition, while others fail to live up to their trained-for level. If the mental conditioning could be influenced, that would definitely be intriguing.

There should be a pad/phone app for this type of training. I'm ready! :-)

Not directly related to sport (yet) but a series showing on ABC here in Australia call "Redesign My Brain" is about the plasticity of the brain and various methods that can be used to train certain aspects - memory, creativity, lateral thinking etc.

Fascinating stuff and the final episode next week looks like it will deal with more physical results of brain training.

Not sure if this works for those outside of Oz:-

I used to work construction. My boss told me the most important tool on the jobsite was the one between my ears.

Pretty sure the same thing applies to cycling training! :)

Slightly different news on the brain training theme... Cav (or at least his agent) reckon he isn't as thick as he seems and has actually conditioned his brain to go "beyond the zone".
