Recently the board software has been updated and there are some known bugs/failures:

Good day,

I had bought a budget cross / commute bike, Felt F95x two years ago. Removed all of the Sora, Tiagra junk and Built up what I thought would be a lite bike. It was my very first bike I had built myself. Turns out it cam in at 8981 grams total. I was a little disappointed. Eventually I tore the bike down and used the parts for other projects. I have been (not really) trying to sell the frame, I really don't want to. I am kind of attached to it for some reason. I love the color scheme!

Anyway, the previous build was all Rival with the Cross specific Rival crank set. The wheels were Mavic Ksyrium elite's 2006 model. Trp euro x brakes and a Ritchey WCS cockpit. Tires were origin-8 cross tires, cant remember the specific model.

So I completely took the frame and fork apart and weighed them.

51cm frame with the brake bosses and the B/B cable router came in at 1380g

Felt Fork came in at 670g

My goal is to have a complete build less then 7400g with in a budget.


Any suggestions on parts

So far this is what I have

Frame 1380
3T ARX Team stem 132g
Felt 1.1 42cm bars 205g
Trp Euro X brakes (need to weigh)
Sram Rival Shifters
Sram Force Front Derailleur
Sram Rival Crankset
Truvativ BB
Sram 12-26 cassette

Looking for a used Red rear derailleur, and 3t Dorico seatpost.

Any other Ideas?

The likes of a Ritchey WCS fork will save you the biggest chunk of weight - about 200g

What pedals are you planning to run?

Egg beaters. I had the basic ones. Haven't thought about that. Any suggestions?

How do you like your Nature Boy? I was thinking about using one for SSCX. What was the weight?

Good weight for the frame. A light fork at around 450 grams and some 20mm or 38mm carbon tubulars of ebay or similar and you should. Get a pair of Eggbeaters, SL or 2ti, and then ti axles from Ebay and you will get a really light pair of pedals for little money. I changed to ti axles on my Eggbeater SLs and they are now ca 175 grams.

Are they designed for egg beaters specifically?

You can get ti axles for Eggbeaters on ebay or from Ward. It's easy to change from the original steel axles.

I ran across this fork while looking on ebay. Since this project has a budget it is really appealing. I am concerned about the durability.

Photo shows canti fork and description is for disc fork?

Also check the fork length i.e. hub centre to crown race - CX forks are typically 400-405 whereas some 'street' forks are designed for MTB frames and can be as long at 420 or 425 which kicks the front of your frame up a bit.

Will you keep your '06 Ksyrium Elites for this build or will you be using another wheel set?
Also, the difference between the rival and red derailleur is minimal in terms of weight. Perhaps the money could be better spent on a lighter crankset.

The Ksyriums are another bike. I plan on picking up some ebay carbon Tubulars. I scored a Red rear derailleur for a hundred bucks. What cranks did you have in mind? The rival cranks are a descent weight for the money.

The difference between Red and Rival cranksets is only about 70g (760g vs 830g respectively) but a KCNC K2 would save you 166g at 664g for the set. These are about $400 USD for a set, but you can gauge how much this is worth to you.

Worried about the strength of those cranks. I will be doing some races on this bike. Im also concerned about running a KCNC seat post for the same reason. Broken parts stabbing me in the middle of a race would Suck!!!

Good point. What post do you plan to run? I am using my Thomson Elite Setback for cross. It is relatively heavy but I am far from smooth and weigh 80kg on a good day. It is nice to know that your post will still be okay when you slip on the mount and slam your junk into your saddle. I think if you are smooth and weigh under 85kg, you can get away with a carbon post.

I wish you good luck on your build. I have a felt F25 frame from 2005 in the same liquid orange color that I plan to build into my road single speed before the summer. I'd love to see some pics of how everything turns out for you.
