Any Old School (Looking) Frames That Can Be Modernised?

The spirit of Grav-lo-cross. No but seriously, cyclocross and gravel go here!

Just wondering if anyone knows of any older style steel, alu (looking) frames that'd be suitable for modernizing for gravel/commuting/general abuse. Presumably it'd be easier to go custom but just wondering if there's anything out there that could meet my criteria?

Looking for something that hopefully has:
  • Internal routing/full cable housing
  • 12mm axle's
  • 1 1/8th or tapered steerer
  • This is weight weenies, so the lighter the frameset the better.
  • Wide(ish) tyre clearance 35mm +
  • (Non essential) - Single speed compatibility
Essentially looking to build something similar to the Speedvagen GTFO, unfortunately can no longer buy framesets from them.

Huh, old frame with 12mm axles and tapered steerer?

If 2 years counts as old for you, maybe.

I like the look/idea of a Lemond Poprad, but haven't ridden one.
But yes, external cables and QR there.

Which is why I included the Old school "(looking)" part to my post. As in more retro styling, steel tubing, lugged, horizontal top tubes etc... Doesn't neccesarily need to be and old frame.

Seen things like:
Ritchey - Good materials, weight, external cables not ideal (wanting for bike packing etc so straps can be problematic)
Kona - Standard tubing, not fancy, heavier, internal or full cable housing is better, mounting points etc.

This looks good, 20mm isn't fundamental. Will look more into this thank you!

My frames all have external cabling for simplicity and attaching bags is not a problem.

The Ritcheys are excellent BTW.

Ahh yes, I should’ve said no top tube routed cables, down tube routed I don’t mind. Good to know though. That’s unfortunately where I’m a bit put off with the Ritcheys.

Really liking the look of the Lemond Poprad Disc, shame they’re like hens l teeth to find.

Anything of similar ilk with good tyre clearance would be ideal.

Have you considered the All City Cosmic Stallion the Curve GXR (aka the Kevin of Steel) or the Niner RLT Steel?

A joy to ride.. 853 steel is excellent. Mine left in favor of Ti.. and the name plastered ahead of the Poprad model.

Great bike via Trek.
