The ES's will do fine.
Pro, Tim Johnson uses them and many others do too I just can't think of their names

I am going to use a set of ES tubulars as my race wheels this year. I have found that anything that will toast a Ksyrium ES will take out most any wheel. The only "advantage" the SLs have is that the front rim is slightly deeper and may take getting slammed into a curb with weight on it better.
Most of the local CX gurus keep telling me that cross isnt as hard on rims as us newbies think because the big tires absorb a lot of punishment.

My SL's are standing up well, and I'm riding MTB trails!
You will be fine, I agree with the tire theory.
