any others? any thoughts as to if the WU or AQ would be an improvement (weight or otherwise) over the stocl merckx?

I upgraded an old steel frameset a few years ago with a 1" AQ fork and it was way too flexible, but then again I am a heavier rider (200 lbs) I have a few friends with the WU forks and they love their stiffness. The WU is typically not a light as the WU, but if you value stiffness over weight in a fork, then the WU is the best choice. You might want to ask around - I heard that WU is planning to produce an all carbon version of their fork. Could be a vicious rumor, but worth investigating.
