My force 1 cross bike currently has a 40 and 11-36. I'm considering putting on a 44 up front for gravel rides. Will that require a chain longer than I currently have installed?

Likely yes. For CX season, I run 38, 40 and 42T chainrings with an 11-32 cassette. I can't run the same length chain for the 38 and 42.

I'm pretty sure you can use a chain that works with 42t also with a 38t.

SRAM 1x mechs will do that, and all other rear derailleurs are 2x and will do a much bigger difference too.

I'll size up a new chain and let you all know.

425 cx chainstay + 40 front + 36 rear = 53.4 chain length, rounded up to 54
