I am thinking 11-40 cassette and 34/50 road crankset.
Will this work?
What derailleur cage length to get?
Also- XTR disc calipers. What model calipers to get for a cross bike? 9000 or 9020?
Just copied this:
Just in case you're wondering (and we're not sure why you would), Shimano knows that the new 11-40T cassette won't fit on road wheels.

I suggest you guys post questions like these at online magazine and such.
If we're lucky, they may actually do an article and the subject is sorted.
When i bought my bike (custom built), the dealer refused to even try mixing groupsets (MTB and Road).
They told me Shimano had informed them this was not recommended, not possible.
I know some have managed.
Personally i run UL Di2 with medium derailleur cage. It handles 11-28 (minimum), 11-32 (maximum)
Some say they've managed to get a 11-36 to work but according to Shimano, this is not possible.
Perhaps you can mail Wolftooth and ask more specific of these?

I also asked this question to Bikeradar and Wolftooth.
If i'll get replies, i will post them at your thread.

xtr di2 test with 34t-48t
XTR Di2 Tinkering – Road Cranksets – 2 x 11 System – ✔
The Good – Even though the XTR Di2’s front derailleur cage is about two centimetres shorter than its road equivalent, it shifts flawlessly between 48T and 34T chainrings.
The Bad – When the chain was on the small chainring, the inner front derailleur cage would rub against the chain when the rear derailleur was shifted to one of the three cassette cogs closest to the spokes. This is due to the decreased bottom bracket width; the derailleur cannot move far enough to the left.
The special XTR Di2 front derailleur mount (the low mount in our case) left a 5mm gap between the seat tube and the mount itself – I (JOM) don’t recall the seat tube size of Dr. Pain’s frame, but it required us to use the thicker of the two spacer sets supplied with the XTR Di2 front derailleur mount. If a custom, ovalized spacer set could be fabricated, the problem would be solved, allowing the derailleur to sit further left, relative to a road crankset.

BR-M9000 have magnesium body - only works rigid hose SM-BH90-SBM (BH59 banjo is not magnesium friendly)
BR-M9020 have aluminum body - can be used with rigid hose SM-BH90-SB and standard hose SM-BH59-SB
Shimano recommends SM-BH59 for road hydraulics, because they modulate more familiar like non-disc brakes
but technically you can use SM-BH90 and this can be personal choice, may be for cross vs road rigid is better

You will need to use an xtr front and rear derailleur. The xtr RD cannot be paired with any road FD. The xtr FD is designed for wider BB spacing and 10t chainring differences, as mentioned above. You also need a round seattube or some sort of mtb FD mount for the xtr to mount. It is not compatible with braze on FD mount. All this said, I would not at all expect the FD to be capable of working with the 16t gap on a compact crank. If you decide to try it, please let us know.

Quick update:
I was running into troubles as the cage could not move far enough inside due to the reduced bottom bracket width (road vs mtb).
A friend of mine is currently customizing the clamp which will bring the derailleur 3mm closer to the seattube.
We will give it the next try mid next week, will keep you posted!

Anyone else get the front derailleur to work?
My Scott Addict CX 10 has a braze on front derailleur hanger (but the hanger is removable).
I wonder if either the Type D or Type E might work with the bolt holes on the frame.
Or just use one of the band clamps?
