Have been pondering just the same for a long time, and tried various tyres (27mm Vittoria Pave, Grifo XS and Almanzos, Conti 4 Season, ...). My resolution is that as long as the trail is short, just go with the biggest slicks that clear, Jan Heine style. (for your desired wheel size, of course). Slicks work well on road and gravel, and the short trails you just have to negotiate to get through. Even moderate gravel/CX knobbies take a lot of the speed+fun out of the road sections.

If you insist, Challenge Gravel Grinder could be a compromise, because the file tread in the centre wears down quickly, and you're left with a slick. But the side lugs will only bite if you lower pressure once you hit the mud, which is a hassle. Also it requires ghetto tubeless (tyre not spec'd w/o tubes).

How did the saying go?
It's better to have speed in situations without grip, than grip in situations without speed.

I thought of Maxxis Refuse (40mm), but nah!
You should try Hutchinson Black Mamba CX (34mm)... this is a fast tire.

BTW, i ordered Clement X'plor MSO tubeless.
