I live in a flat region in Belgium, so I have a 38T ring and a 12-27 cassette on my X-Night for off Road riding. Wouldn't want To use It in the hills Both up and Down. For Road use I could get away with a 42T where I live.

during offseason (CX) I run my bike with 44 and 11-28.
Hills/rollers are fine with this gearing and can keep up with others on the road.

I've been riding 1x10 for a couple of years on my cx bike in a hilly area and swapped between 38t and 42t with 11-36 cassette.
38t got me round the fred whitton this year but maxes out at about 40kmph on the flat with cadence over 110.
42t gets me to 50kmph but obviously makes the climbs a little tougher.

Im running a 38 chain ring and a 11-36 cassette on a Santa Cruz Stigmata for about 2 months now and I love it. I don't race so I don't need the top end and I have enough to climb whatever gets in the way, I have done a gravel ride that was 68 miles with 5000ft of elevation and I had no issues with the gearing. All in all I'm very happy with the setup with 38c tires, this spring I plan on buying some 28 or 30c tires and use it as a road bike.

I was really interested to run 1*11. But i was discussing this matter with another person. He told me, he could not recommend me to go this route due to how i told him i would use the bike.
So i did change mind and went for UL Di2.
I will start with 50/36 and then swap for 46/36 in the winter.
But it had been cool skipping the FD and i am curious of the Force CX RD.

If you are going UL Di2, it's pretty easy to experiment with 1x. Get a Wolftooth 1x chainring and RoadLink and test it out. If you don't like it, pretty easy to change rings and add the FD.

Good call.

Do this:

Google "SRAM Force broken lever". Read a bit. Then click on the Google "images". https://www.google.com/search?q=sram+fo ... s&tbm=isch

This was so common I can't believe SRAM is still in business.

It happened to me, just before stage one of my biggest race of the year. Fortunately I was able to swap in another lever. And... this was road bike, not something that gets banged around.

I later swapped in all Shimano.

Not complete yet but here is the Di2 1x setup I'm finishing for gravel and trails. It's road duty will be riding back and forth to them from the house. If I like it, I'll pick up a XTR Di2 RD.
