I am looking for a new cross frame. My current bike is a Kona Major Jake from 2008. It has served me well, but I would prefer something with hydraulic disc brakes now. I will be using it for winter training (in the snow), and some cyclocross races.
What I'm looking for:
- Carbon or aluminium frame, doesn't matter that much.
- Lots of tire clearance (ability to run 27.5" wheels with 2.1" MTB tires would be a huge plus).
- HT angle not steeper than 72.5 degrees.
- Nothing too heavy (not looking for steel).
Short list so far:
- Santa Cruz Stigmata (72.0 deg. HT angle).
- Open U. P. (supports 2.1" tires on 27.5" wheels).
Please help me add frames to the list

is their anything special that a frame needs to be to run 27.5?
TCX have clearance for 35mm knobblies on 700c, perhaps a little more.
Pretty light for SLR (alloy) frameset. the full carbon OD2 15mm thru axle fork that comes with it is 400g uncut.
depending on size frame is ~ 1420g with hanger (depending on size)
Seatpost that comes with it (assuming the SL version of seatpost) is ~215g inc clamp.
They are ubiquitous so i image any shop could easily check the tire clearance for 27.5

Not the wheel size in particular, but the wider tires is not normally supported by cross frames.
The Open will take 42 mm cross tires on 29" wheels, the Stigmata 41 mm. Since the U. P. can take 2.1" tires on 27.5" wheels, I'm guessing the clearance with 29" wheels has to be 40+ mm.
The TCX looks nice, and I have been thinking about getting it for a while, but I decided that since my cross bike has to be a do it all bike, a pure race bike won't do.

From the specs it seems that the Open will have the most clearance.
Question is- do you really need that much clearance?
I think that the Stigmata blows the doors off of the Open in almost every way- including cost.
I really don't like the slack seat angle/zero offset post design of the Open.
I think that the Stigmata is a more sane design and it will fit more riders well.
Also, the Stigmata is fairly future proofed- thru axle front, 142mm thru axle rear, internal disc housing, etc.

I am also more hooked on the Stigmata to be honest...
I wonder what would happen with 27.5" wheels on the Stigmata. Would it be able to take 2.0" tires? The reason why I'd like that tire clearance is that it would be the perfect training bike for me, when I'm not on my mountain bike. The wider tires would allow me to take it on some rooty trails, which I couldnt with my Major Jake with 33c tires...

Proprietary seat clamps have proven a failure in the industry since Vitus did it in the 80s. Creaking and poor clamping force are usually the results. The picture of the Giant is sweet, but that seat clamp design looks like a major headache. Especially if you plan on bouncing off roots.

This might fit your needs? They say it fits 29x1.75 so I imagine 27.5 x 2.0 might fit? Seems pretty decent specs for the money. The headtubes of these are 72.5 or less. Smallest sizes have 71 degree
but not hydraulic brakes

this one is a flat bar with hydraulic SRAM Guide brakes. But then it's not really a cross bike. You could sell off the parts?

Giants Seatpost works exellent.
I love it.
2014 only at Cx
2015 on 15 other bikes.

Do you have a 27.5" wheel you could try to use with 2.0" MTB tires (Schwalbe Racing Ralph or similar)?
On-One Pickenflick
I don't know about 27.5x2.1, but I have seen it on another forum where someone fitted 26x2.25 something. The poster even included a picture. It was a German language forum if I remember right. I'll post a link if I can find it.
Update:
Updated the 26x2.25 tire size, and here's the referenced link:

Louis Garneau Steeple Xc-Elite
Open mold frame apparently. Cyclocross Magazine said they were able to fit a 29x1.9 in the back

I still haven't decided on a frame yet. Suggestions are more than welcome.
I'm not too hooked on the Giant, since I'm sure they are going to introduce a revised frame next year.
Any suggestions for aluminium frames handmade in Europe? I have looked at Squid Bikes, but I have to pay import taxes, and it will be quite expensive...
Currently these bikes are on my shortlist:
- Focus Mares CX 1.0/Ultegra
- Felt F1x
- Something custom?
