XT or XTR rear derailleur with 9000 shifter?

The spirit of Grav-lo-cross. No but seriously, cyclocross and gravel go here!

Found out that you can use DI2 road shifters with XTR if you use XTR front and rear derailleurs.
The XTR front will work with a compact chainset.
This might be the way to go?
Do you know for sure that an XTR Di2 front mech will shift a compact or are you assuming?

Reason I ask is I'm toying with the idea of building an all-roads bike with Di2 running 46/34 and 11-32 or 11-36 11 speed. Shimano state 10 tooth difference so that may have to be 46/36. But the thing that I'm concerned about is the ability to shift to a 46.

Why don't you just use 6870 fd or 9070 fd?

Maximum is 16 teeth (50/34)

Because it won't allow use of a larger sprocket than 32 on the rear. I want the option of using a 36 as this will be a gravel bike and cross bike. One has to use the XTR front if using the XTR rear.

I see.

But imo 46/36 is plenty low if you run 11-36t cassette in almost any condition.

The 36 sprocket dictates an XTR mech which in turn dictates a matching front mech.

I agree.

But XTR with 46/36 should be no problem.

Cool. I was concerned that it's designed to work on a 40t outer so might not be happy on a 46. I'd like to try sequential shifting possibly.
