Looks like SRAM had plans for this for a while. There will be a new version of the CX1 derailleur that can handle the 10-42 cassettes!

Yeah -- but it's a boat anchor. If this approach works well it's going to save 80+ grams.

Maybe they'll come out with a Red version of the derailleur. Seems like they are making a big push for 1x road.

I'm guessing the 'long cage' CX1 will be just like their WiFLi RD's where it's not just a long cage, but the top pulley also gets moved to a different position so that you have more clearance for a larger cassette.
If someone really wants to use the 10-42 with road shifters, surely the easiest and cheapest option at the moment is to simply run the X9/X0 Type2 RD. My understanding is that this works just fine, no mods required. SRAM 10 speed RD's work with 11 speed road shifters (the indexing is all controlled by the shifters) and the RD can handle the 42 tooth cog.

i had the RED 10 speeds short cage and wifli in the same moment, both off the bike .
looking at them , the upper pulleys are in the same position, wifli lower pulley is obviously a bit far from other pulley for the cage lenght ... but the real difference is the "arm" of the rear derailleur.
sorry to not took pictures, wiflii is now sold, but wifli "arm" is longer, curved, and puts the cage inner than the short cage version.
CX1 is similar to XX1 rear derailleur, with horizon movement technology.
upper pulley in both RDs is backwarded around 2cm , compared to other mtb RD, to manage high diameters cogs.
like K-Edge did fot the Di2 hack to install a 7970 rd on a mtb with 11-36 cassette.
