What exactly are is the elite without contract division in cyclocross? Are they literally pros that have yet to secure a contract with a team or sponsor? If that is so, how is it that the current belgian elite without contract champion has Frans Vos logos all over his skinsuit?

Wouldn't that mean he would have a sponsorship contract?

Elite zonder contract (elite without a contract) can have sponsors, they just don't have a contract with a pro-level team.

Lol... just see this topic now. I'm an "elite zonder contract" (elite z/c) in road racing. It is an age group: a junior is 16 or 17 years old, an espoir ("belofte", or U23) is maximum 22 years older. All older guys are elite ("zonder contract").

The other category is elite mc ("met/with contract"), what is a more a quality group. All these athletes (and they can be under 23) have a professional contract and are as such known by the UCI. This is an official category that gives them certain garantuees (minimal payment according to belgian law etc).

The "without contract" thing only means "without pro contract".

(in fact the whole legal status is even more difficult, but these are the base lines)
