Ultegra 6800 Wheelset + Challenge Grifo XS Open Tubular

Hey there!

I did my homework (used the search first), but couldn't find the answer...

If it has already been answered, than i'm sorry.

Combination: Shimano Ultegra 6800 tubeless ready wheelset + open tubular (Challenge Grifo XS Open Tubular) cx tires.

Question: do i need to use rim tape for this combo? The inner surface of the rim is originally smooth, and there are no holes for the spokes.

As above. Those tyres are not suitable for tubeless conversion though, as skinwalls are too porous according to people who know more than me:

Yeah, i read about that. Thank god, i only plan to use it with inner tube, as a non tubeless wheelset. Thanks for the heads up though!

Remember that the Ultegra wheelset is for road tubeless. Which is an entirely different standard from "regular" (MTB) tubeless (as is found on the Stan's rims).

TUBULAR cannot be ridden onTUBELESS rims. In order to run tubular you would need to buy tubular wheels

Hi all,

Challenge open tires are handmade tires and follow the technology of tubular. They are designed to be used with tubes and with traditional ETRTO rims.
Tubeless is a recent development that still is not set or defined for the road side. There are still too many issues to be resolved and standards to be set before it
will takeover the clincher market. If it ever will.

To run an open as tubeless is very difficult, not much for the casing that is pours and this with simple sealant is resolved and that in any case the system requires
but are the beads shape and size that do not seal and hold. They work with 6 bars 87psi max on the road on some tubeless wheels but the hooks and internal sizing
of these wheels do not match our bead shape and the tire can blow of.
We therefore do NOT recommend tubeless systems with open tires.

From this year we have the Grifo 120tpi, this is a clincher nylon based and is more suitable for tubeless systems. Road side Fore 120tpi can be used also.

It would be very nice to see a Challenge tubeless cross tire. But you should definately go for the mountain bike tubeless-ready kind of tire. This would also be nice, such that we can use our MTB wheels on our cross bikes.

Road tubeless is another standard, and mainly for tires that need high pressure AFAIK.
