What kind do you use for your cross-bikes? I have a small wheel on the frame so I can use both top and bottompull!

I'm thinking about road derailleur because of the weight but maybe the mtb derailleur is better because of the compact chainrings?

It is indeed. Slightly more curved than the normal one.

but wouldn't a road front derailleur for compact chainrings be the same as a mtb front derailleur?

mtb derailleurs are a bit tricky to adjust, i would use a road derailleur. at the moment i'm using a record one for normal chainrings(no ct)with dura ace 10 speed levers without any problems.
