Wheels, tires, skewers and cassette = 2450? Change them to a 303 set or enve 45's and Ebay the 808's. Might break even! Do you know how much the zipp tubies weigh? I think they are around 270,

OK..Ok...Not just touring, got 5 TRI's scheduled for this summer season also, 3 Sprints, 1 Olympic, & 1 Half Ironman..... The wheels were a deal I picked up from another TRI guy who has much deeper pockets. He picked up some new 808's and sold me his old 808's for under a Grand..with new tubies and low mileage DA cassette. I'll be running these for a while..and I like them for not only the function on long rides..they look killer too..

I'm a over 40 age grouper (whose primary sport is running, just signed up for the Chicago Marathon) with a daughter in college and a son graduating from HS this spring... the economy hasen't been kind to me either..

As I would love to buy a new set of uber light rims..the money is just not there at the moment. There is the future possibility of a big $$$ change down the line..but probably far into the future as I'll have to wear out my existing wheelset or groupset...

Right now, just having fun tweaking the bike while balancing $$$ vs. Grams... There is a little more challenge and pride than just throwing money at it...

I have some great tips from the group with the 2 brake set choices (KCNC or Planet X CNC) and the Keywin Pedals. Both additions will be relative low budget upgrades with nice weight savings...

Rick, thanks for the inspiration of bringing the weight down on an S-Works bike. I ponied up today and grab a pair of brand new 2011 Zipp 404 Tubulars for $1450 off eBay. That drops my weight down from my Cosmics Carbone SL's by ~1.1 lbs (which will be up on eBay soon). I still have a lot of work to do to get close to your bike weight, but still happy with it.

I have seen used 404 tubulars for $100-$105 cheaper than what I paid on eBay. You could eBay your 808's and swap them out for 404 tubulars at even money and lose 1/2 pound were it matters the most. I do agree though, the 808's look killer and are better for tri's since you aren't doing many accelerations. Once you get those up to speed, you stay there. If your sticking to tri's instead of bike racing, I'd stick with the 808's.

Just looked at a Performance Bike email and they have EC90 SL stems, 110mm, for ~ $100, and WCS Carbon at $90.

Even more if you replace the 808's (assume traditional) with 404FC's!

I saved app 500gr by replacing my 808/1080 set with 404FC. Also more comfortable & better looks!

And if you wan to analyze $ / gr... maybe take also into account selling the old parts on ebay etc? This will lower the ratio a lot!

I just finished building a Cervelo S3 and ended up buying the Planet X CNC Ultralight calipers. 200 grams with pads. Relatively easy to install. Center caliper arms and simultaneously tighten the mounting bolt. Done. And they stay put. Got mine on sale for $125, but even if they're more now they're worth it. I'm using them on carbon rims and can't imagine needing any more power than they're able to produce. By far the best bargain out there and they're light!

Alright, my income taxes were better than expected and I think I can squeeze a little $$$ from my return for “toys”..

I went ahead and ordered the Keywin CRM Ti for $145 ($135 + $10sh) and will be splurging for the KCNC C7 brakes.. These two items will save me 106 grams and 168 grams respectively.

As much as I was impressed with the NEW Keywin Carbon Ti Pedals, the $300 price tag only saved another 30grs and twice over the price.

The suggestion regarding the 2011/2012 ZIPP 404 Tubular Firecrests weight as compared to my ZIPP tubular 808’s has me thinking… ZIPP is claiming the new shape has an over effectiveness very similar to my older 808’s.

Does anyone have the actual weights of a set of 2011/2012 404’s and a set of older 808’s (minus tires and cassette as I would swap them over) I think that I could sell my 808’s and pick up a used set of 404’s with around an $800 additional output of funds.

If there is a real significant weight difference this could give me a big jump on the next goal weight of 13.99 lbs or better…

Hey, about the 808 vs 404 FC;

I did the swap; 1080 & 808 clincher set 2008 vs 2012 404 FC set -> 563gr!
Of course a complete 808 set will save less, but I assume between 300-400gr. Best money spend!
The quality, comfort and aerodynamics of the 404FC is SUPERB.

Weight reduction so easy?

Replaced the 1080 / 808 clinchers for 404FC clinchers... saves me a massive 563gr!!!
Replacing the brake pads (original Campi to Zipp cork) 1 gr per pad -> 4gr
Total already saved 567gr

Bringing the lean bike (without bottles, Edge800 and massive saddle bag) to 7413gr...
Not too bad for a 62cm bike... oke also not real WW...

It's a trade off between comfort, quality and stiffness....

Later I will be able to save at least 25gr on the saddle post and 5 gr on the fork stem.... 30gr.
So be able to go to 7.383gr

Not sure how to reduce more without changing parts as I am happy with the bike now (look & feel)...

I would get a set of Enve tubulars. Extra Light hubs lighter, stronger, and aero all for 970 grams, cost is about mid 2K. You can buy my vuma quad if you would like, selling it for $750, I live in chicago as well. don't get eh 404's

I agree. lighter isn't always better, but he's trying to get the weight down. I run a 20/24h setup, really stiff and strong on lightweight hubs. Have hit some metal construction covers and experience no damage what-so-ever.

I did a little digging and found these weights from some previous posts…

Back in 2006, a set of tubular 808’s were measured and recorded at 1446 grams (30 grams heavier than Zipp’s advertised/claimed weight at 685 front & 761 rear)

Just recently there was a thread on a set of 2011 Zipp 404 Firecrest tubies with a photo showing them on a scale together and weighing in at 1312 grams.

Both were with bare wheel sets without tires or cassette, just freehub..and the difference is only 134 grams????

If these are accurate, there doesn’t seem to be that big of a gain (ie net loss) between upgrading to a set of 404’s from my 808’s.

Just something that might come in handy for you as well...

I just ordered Keo Blade Ti -> 185gr / pair... dont go for the CroMo as they are still not as light as should be!
Expensive, but will save a lot vs your current!
Anyhow, I found a 12NM version (Ti!) for Euro 199,- incl shipping (inside Netherlands).
119 gr savings for Euro 199,-.... but you have to change to Look system...

Skewers; Mt Zoom ti are 43 gr per pair and reasonable in price!
Will save you a bit over 30 gr! -> Almost a gram an Euro....

Only with those 2 upgrades you will be from 6958 gr to almost 6800 gr! Close to your target.

Add the 404FC to it and you will get to 6450gr or so! over 300 gr below target
303FC will bring it even lower....

And yes the investment is relative high, but you can sell the "old" parts!

The 808s + touring comment confuses me. Get some 303s and call it a day.

For what it's worth, my 56 Sworks SL3 is 14.8 with nothing chi-chi on it, except the Sworks TRP brakes (alu bar, stem, and post, SI SL cranks, Red group, 1070 cassette). Wheels are 1500gr clinchers.
