Anyone heard of these guys?

From what I can tell they're an boutique Italian custom carbon manufacturer that makes ultra light, ultra sexy frames.

I saw one hanging up in my local bike shop. It looked nice enough to make me want one and although I didn't get a chance to weigh it it certainly felt light.

Pete, what are people in Rome saying about about the Dimar?

In your opinion are they rare cause they're crap, cause they're expensive or for some other reason?

I haven't ever spoken to anyone about them. They occasionally come up in a bike mag review (and these reviews tend to be very positive, but when isn't that the case?). I believe I 'ran into one' once and the owner waxed poetic about it, but owners usually do.

So, I have never heard any honest to goodness comments on their quality. IIRC, I liked the story behind the company - I believe (could be wrong) that they are a group of young technical guys who are very passionate about riding and decided they could make a living out of making high end bikes the way they liked them. Originally they were MTB-ers and they then branched into road bikes.

Again, IIRC, they do everything in-house and are very focused on customising frames to your needs.

I appreciate your insight re every review being positive and every bike owner offering a subjective review. I totally agree.

I love the fact that they are ex MTB'ers as no one knows how to do stiff like an MTB'er and I'm looking for something ultra stiff.

I also like that they have a technical background, that they are small, have a cycling background etc.

Sounds like my sort of company.

I'm going to give them a call and if what they have to say appeals I'll go visit them in Italy. I'll be sure to let you know how I get on.

Dave Lloyd, the former professional cyclist and a top coach in the UK has (or certainly did) have one custom made for him about 18 months ago and he raved about it. it did look very VERY nice.

Yeah, I think it was his new frame that I saw waiting to be built up in my LBS.

With his credentials it's hard not to consider his opinion in high regard. That being said, I read somewhere recently that he was now the local agent for Dimar. Perhaps he liked them so much he "bought the company" so to speak. Either way, this obviously affects his objectivity.

I emailed him a few days ago but haven't heard back.

I doubt it would cloud or influence his judgement too much. Dave is pretty forthright with his opinions; if he thinks something isn't right or good, he will be the first to say so...but if he loves something, he will champion the cause like no other I know. I think its fair to say that these are great, but pricey frames, but you do pay for custom carbon.

Oh, and he will get back to you, he's almost certainly coaching somebody or doing an epic training ride into north Wales! He can take his time with email replys.

@JohnnySea, please do double check with Dimar - I am going by memory here - I will attempt to dig out the review of their high end road frame that I happened upon (several years ago). I recall being impressed by the write-up, but would not swear about the details!

Not sure how good your Italian is, but essentially it says it is entirely designed for the user and is a 'no compromise' ultra high end frame.

I can't read a word of Italian but I will have a mate translate it.

Don't e concerned that I'm making a decision on your say so.

I will be checking them out very thoroughly and will definitely be visiting them and meeting the builder before I decide to go ahead. That being said, I get a good feeling about these guys.

On an unrelated matter, I'm doing the Giro delle Dolomitti next year. have you heard of it or ever done it by any chance?

The Dimar-Lloyd featured here has been owned by me for the last two years. I bought it from Dave Lloyd. First of all, this is a super bike with a super set up. It handles beautifully and probably the best bike I have ridden in my 52 years awheel. Some changes since the feature in Cycling Weakly: Reynolds wheels, not Lightweights; Shorter stem (carbon) and Look Keo Carbon max pedals. It weighs around 6.3 kilos and climbs like a dream. It is part of my stable of 20 bikes here in Thailand. Love it. Just love it.

1000g for a size 56 is hardly ultra light. Plus if they are Italian, you could add 15%.
