Carbon bolts...

I thought I saw a link to some carbon fiber bolts/screws about a year or so ago, but can't find it. Does anybody know of a company that makes them? Thanks.

Buy a TIME. Comes with free French made water cage bolts.

Heard that they are actually stronger than alloy bolts, so one can use them anywhere on the bike except for seatpost clamps and stems.

Hi, keen to hear who is using carbon, nylon or even plastic bolts? Where do you use them? Lastly where do you purchase them?

Schmolke makes them, and you can't use them on anything load bearing like a stem. You can use them a bottle cage, headset cap, derailleurs. Here is a complete list of where you can used them:

Thanks for that, I don't really understand why if carbon is so strong and we use it for load bearing in most applications that the bolts are different and can't be load bearing. I'm not arguing, I'm just keen to understand the reasoning or really the engineering behind why its brilliant for frames, cranks, bars, stems...but for this application its no good?

The problem is you can build carbon rods that are stronger and stiffer than almost anything else (boron composite would be even stiffer). But how do you deal with the shear forces at the base of the threads?

Furthermore, for certain applications, a material with the fragile failure mode of CFRP is a risk. You prefer something able to bend past the yield strenght point in places where your life is at risk.

As far as I'm aware 'carbon' bolts aren't usually carbon fibre as such either. I'm fairly sure that they are peek plastic impregnated with carbon. Not that there's anything wrong with that

I got some carbon bolts with a Time RXR frameset. I would only use them in water bottle cage application where a fail would not change my ability to ride home.

I'm only using nylon bolts for bottle cages but some people use them in derailleurs for tension screws as well and holding on brake blocks
