You mean like in the '96 Olympic Men's Road Race when an American (LANCE) cut through a gas station parking lot in one of the turns (not just the sidewalk corner but actually THROUGH the lot) to help him make an attack and try to get away? What was the penalty? Oh wait, no penalty.

Yes there is always some favoritism for home riders, just ask Pavel Tonkov about the Giro.

 Very typical for a road race. Whenever there will be a possibility of doing this, it will happen... not in TT's of course.

I remember a race earlier this race. The jury came to the riders and said: "Everyone riding on the footpath will be taken out of the race!" We came on a cobblestone section and the whole peloton rode on the footpath. 8) The stupid guys, there were no sanctions! Of course, if they wanted to force us to ride on the cobblestones, they should have installed barriers.
It's all about a good organization.

Erwin Vervecken made the same comment when he raced on US soil for some cross races. Said he was amazed how the riders stayed on the course the promoter wanted, rather than cutting any section that wasn't taped off. heh.

Only because you are Belgian!

Honestly in the US if you go over a centerline normally you will be taken from the race depending on how long you are out there, as it's a safety violation.
