In Canada, kids are not allowed to race on carbon rims before age 17 I think.

I'm stunned when I see small bikes with carbon wheels...Guess it's meant to satisfy our narcissic needs more than the kids's...

I think that rule applies to all juniors worldwide... no carbon rims, no tubulars. Junior gearing as well. At least for sanctioned races. But I know, for myself, I want to build my son the lightest set of wheels I can for the upcoming Mt. Washington Hill Climb. It's not narcissism... it's simply trying to provide him the most appropriate equipment for the purpose. Were it a sanctioned event, I would stick to the rules. But since there are no rules for this event, I want to give him the lightest wheels I can afford.

I know nothing more... just stumbled on it while reading through some tweets

Some photos of my son's new (to him) Felt F-24 in climbing dress. It's not quite finished... still need to upgrade/lighten wheels, brakes, seatpost, and bottom bracket. This is the bike he will ride up Mount Washington this weekend (practice ride) and next month (race).

Components are DA7800 that I had on a frameset I recently sold. I modified the brifters with Specialized shims which really work well. The cassette is one of Nino's ti 11-34 10-spd models that I had from last year. I tuned the rear derailleur with a combination of Token and Rothsheck parts from eBay. Handlebars are cut down. I intentionally left the steerer long so he will have room to grow. The crankset has an interchangable spider so I can install 110 BCD compact chainrings.

The chainline is a bit tight with this extreme gearing. I managed to just barely trim the front DA derailleur to avoid chain rub. But there is no crossing big-big or small-small. Maybe if I get a compact front derailleur. Contrary to how it looks however, I'm trying to save money and not buy any new parts. Most of this build is with parts I already had in the garage.

Here's the epitome of kid's bike craziness. Does this dad think his daughter is a kid or a lab rat? I guess no one makes 16 x 1" slicks so he's going to make up the difference with an aero bar and a helmet that weighs half of her body weight.

SRAM levers offer adjustable reach which works well.

Shimano offers short reach shifters. (ST-R600)

Spcialized offers shims ( http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBC ... spid=57427 ) which can be used for a variety of levers. My son is using these on a set of Dura Ace levers.
