Does that apply to both the R3 and R5, i.e. are both completely painted black prior to the decals?

The weight of the R3 TEAM 2011 surprised me:( My 2008 R3, size 58cm is 927g.
Whatever. If the TEAM version (black) is 976g, what is the white/blue one? +100g???? Uff. R3 at weight of 1100g....what a progress! :!:

There was no 2011 team. The R3 was available in black or white in 2011 though i do not know the weight diff between them. the team was a new model for 2012 and was available in black whilst the standard R3 for 2012 was white.

Today new framestet Cervelo R3, 2011, size 56cm arrived to me. (the black red version - in 2011 there were NO TEAM version)

The frame is 1002g
The fork is 401g

Uff, both quite porky.
My R3 2007 (58cm) is 927g and fork 340g (this frameset is for sale NOW)....looks like an upgrade in a WW point of view :unbelievable: :-)

Maybe Bike Nüt was right and Cervelo was just pushing weight too far, and they've gone all conservative on us now.

The new 2011+ r-series were always going to be heavier that the previous generation as they contain more frame material. The head tube area is bulkier and taller, as is the BB. Given these were new lay-ups it is more likely that Cervélo would be cautious in optimising the design initially. Hence the addition of the VWD this year.

Does anyone have real weights for the 2012 R3 Team? According to Damon Rinard the 2013 R3 is equivalent to the 2012 R3 Team, and that it weighs 300 g more than the 2013 R5vwd. Was the 2012 R3 Team really that much heavier than the 2012 R5vwd? A year ago the local distributor told me it was only about 100 g heavier.

The R5s are usualy 150g lighter. Nothing changed in 2013.
There has never ever been any difference between R3 and R3 Team in the frame.
Only colour was the difference between R3 and R3 TEAM (the ordinary R3 was white, so it was supposed to be heavier because of the paintjob)

The main difference was that R3 Team had been using SL fork (the same what R5 uses). The SL fork is approx 100g!!!! lighter than the ordinary one

That is all. :smartass:

My LBS told me the 2013 R5 is not a VWD but an R5 team and it should be 60 grams heavier. On cervelo's website they show the same fork for both 2013 and 2012 VWD. I dont see the word team anywhere but its not labeled as VWD like the S5 is. I dont know if the new finish on the 2013s would have an impact on weight like white does. I am pretty sure if I get the 2013 R5 they will announce a VWD version the next day!.

They have a special edition black 2012 R3 rival right next to the R5 VWD and the difference between the two to pick up was staggering. Both had boat anchor wheels. I kind of thought they guys at the LBS would say R3/R5 are very similar, just a little weight difference, but everyone I have spoken to acts like they are from different planets

They are different quite a lot. The R5 is produced in a different way. The R5s bottom bracket is included in one piece with down tube/head tube/top tube piece.
R3 is a different story, the bottom bracket is bonded to the down/head/top tube piece later....so, additional material has to be used to "connect" these 2 parts.
Of course other tubes are layed up in a different way with better materials.

Just curious ....what exactly is the source of this info? I have not seen this sort of info revealed anywhere. Are you confusing R5CA with R5?

On another note, I think this thread needs to be shut down...too much misinformation on weights with people posting weights with frame accessories that should never b included in frame weights. Simply too much misinformation resulting in apples to oranges comparisons of weights among different model years.

If u r going to post weight of frame do so without anything hanging on it...no bearings, rear mech hanger, seat collar, cable guides. Without a consistent baseline with which to make comparisons weight info is useless!

I weigh my frames as they come from the factory. I am not going to take off the rear hanger, collar and cable guides. And in the case of the R5ca, I am not going to take out the pressed in bearings.

I think it is fine to weigh the frame with these items and simply say what you are weighing.
