Unique Campy Bora free hub issue...
Moderator: robbosmans
Two- three year old pair of Bora Ultras- worked nicely with 11 speed cassette on my Extreme C.
Never dissasembled - no issues
Put a 12 speed cassette on for my Dogma F build and during the set-up noticed that when the
wheel is in the frame that cassette will not spin backwards and is chunky going forwards.
All systems are fine including cassette spin when not in frame.
Figured out that the quick release pressure on the hub/freehub is what is causing the
friction.
So what is the culprit and what do I do?
thanks

Nothing to do with the cassette- 12/29 Campy brand new 12 spd
Since the hub/freehub has never been disassembled it can't be due to owner/user error...
Is it an adjustment or a part failure?
When QR tension is increased, the cassette just about stops turning but is not rubbing against anything that I can see from looking at the assembly from the outside..

So far nobody who have had the exact same problem you have, has come forward. And you are sure nothing's catching and assuming that the new cassette (one chnage you've made) is not the culprit.
In the meantime, I suggest that you use try problem-solving. It sounds like you have changed 2 things viz change cassetttes and change bikes. Try one change only eg try it out on the bike the wheel came off first, etc.
Sorry can't be of further help. Good luck.

Less is more.
I've had this happen because of a bad bearing fit inside of a freehub body. It was fine till it was loaded.
Take the wheel off, lay the wheel on its side, out one end cap on the hard floor, press down with your hand on the other side - pressing every together like it's mounted in the bike. Can you reproduce the issue?

Turns out it was the freehub-
outer bearing toasted and the inner one very rough
LBS could not understand how this could have happened
just a 4-5k mikes road use only and little to no rain.
The timing is just odd in that it "appeared" fine when on my 11 spd Extreme C
but nearly immediately after mounting the 12 speed EPS cassette, the problem appear.
I know that the cassette has no influence upon the freehub... but?????

Did you feel the freehub with the cassette on or off? I had one that felt fine without the cassette.V3Rs wrote: ↑Fri Oct 07, 2022 7:15 pmTurns out it was the freehub-

Your old cassette or new one might be oval or be sitting in the right spot.
Were you using a the N3W adapter and long lockring style? Maybe the cassette was wedged on there.

The cassette has no bearing (no pun intended) on the feel of a freehub- it just over and around...
Brand new 12 speed Campy..
What was also interesting is that when spinning the cassette backwards, the axle was spinning
backwards also!
In a rush so I ordered a new one
Does anyone know if bearing failure could damage the freehub body itself? Meaning does it pay to replace the bearings and
keep as a spare?

The freehub bearings aren't cup and cone, only the wheel bearings are.
