Frankies bike project - Finished sanding an R4!!!!
Moderator: robbosmans
Hi all!
It is possible with some alloy frames to mediablast them to remove their finish as the alloy itself is thick enough to have a few mils (not mm's) removed without compromising the integrity of the frameset/part.
The majority of alloy frames which (I suspect) this boards members ride on are on the higher end of the spectrum (meaning 2 and 3x butted tubes etc). I remember years ago on my Giant ATX870 - great frame - developed a hole on its downtube on my drive to the trail head in the back of the wagon as my removed front wheel skewer was rubbing on the downtube of the frame.. There was actually more paint (thickness) on the tube than Al.
Attached below are some images of a haro mtb (Aluminum) which volunteered for a Carbo-Lifting session. This took about 5 hours, not completely sure as we were in the backyard BBQ'ing while it worked.
Something of note to those of you with Mg parts or frames, Carbo-Lift has been extensively tested on bicycle and aircraft grade Mg alloys with great success. For those of you who know; unlike with vinegar, Carbo-Lift does not react in anyway to the Mg on part while it works.
Jeffrey
PS if anyone has a Ferrari they need driven or Carbo-Lifted, drop us a line

Well, this came to a bit of a grinding halt, because cancer was just detected in my mother in laws system. At the moment i need to support my wife as much as i can.
Because i want this done rather sooner then later i'll probably proceed with this on sunday night so i can harvest the results on monday.
You probably understand the situation.
Thanks.

Thanks, there are indeed more important things in life then cycling, but it is such a part of my life and this project offers some distraction as well.
Today i received the last parts of the speedplays, you can see the end result on my Twitter account.

The last updates on the Speedplay Tune project:
Last Saturday the remaining parts of the Speedplay project came in. The black butterflies and Ti mounting bolts.
The stock speedplay butterflies and bolts weight:
the Alloy butterflies and Ti bolts weight:
This combines to a final tuned weight:
That is al light as the claimed weight of the nanograms! And all of that is done at a fraction of the price:
The before weight was 210 grams for the set with the Cromo axles.
Cromo speedplays cost €110 for the set
Ward spindles weight 54.2 grams and cost: € 45 for the set
M4 x 10 Ti. bolts weight 1.6 grams and cost: € 6 per 2
Black ano butterflies cost € 26
M4 bolts for mounting the butterflies cost € 8
Total ---------------------------------------------------------------------
with a grand total of €195 euro spent I have built a set of semi nanograms for a fraction of the price. Nanograms cost € 474. And I haven't even used ceramic bearings.

Did you buy the X1/X2 bowties? I did not see any Zero bowties there. I ordered some 'zero specific' aluminum bowties from a website in Denmark, but said they would not have any in stock for at least 6 months. I thought about X1/X2 aluminum bowties on my zeros, but decided against it since the angle of the edge is significantly steeper on the stock zero bowties than on the X1/X2. Otherwise they fit fine.
Has anyone used the X1/X2 bowties on their zeros? Any issues?

I guess that I was so blind to order the X1/2 bowties.
They work with the zero bodies, so no problem.

That's consistent with my experience of using Zero cleats with X1 pedals: no problem.
Hi,
I take it those are Ti?
Should these be replaced with Al ones then the weight would drop to below the "fatidique" 130g Speedplay barrier.
Anyone knows to how much Nm these need to be torqued exactly?
Ciao,

These are Ti indeed, And they can be replaced with Al. Speedplay glues the original bolts in place, and I did the same on my pedals. A drop of blue will keep them in secure. Replacing them with Al. would be sweet though!
