I know there have been many discussions about wheelsets on this forum, but I didn't see a conclusion .. either that or I didn't understand...
I have an option on an '05 C'Dale R1000 with Elites, or an '04 R2000 with SLs for the same money - is it worth trading down from CAAD8 to 7, & from Ultegra 10 to 9 to get the wheel upgrade?
I'm 190+lbs, so the question really seems to be which wheelset is better for a 'underweight clydesdale' that's starting out & is going to be doing more training rides to begin with than triathlon/racing?
I know the SLs are better but are they better for me? I heard a few say that the Elites are stronger but heavier & better for weightier riders, then someone else said the SLs were better...
Either way on the R1000/2000 decision I'm going with a double & thought the 25 tooth extra gear on this year's bike might be better for me than saving ~300gms on the wheels when I'm 20+lbs too heavy

If I was faced with the same choice I would not hesitate: I would get the newer bike and my decision would have absolutely nothing to do with the wheels. The ten speed option and the newer frame would be my motivation.
I have a set of Elites and they are perfectly good wheels. No question the SL's are better but I expect that over time you will have more issues with the SL's then the Elites. More importantly when you feel like spending some more cash just buy a high end set of (tubular) wheels. A lot easier then upgrading the frame or groupo.
