2008 supersix with Si Sl cranks, ceramic BB . (Bought brand new)
Riding along, not much power when this happened. Axle failed, luckily I didn't fall off.

Took it to local Cannondale dealer, and the axle had failed, in a spiral fashion. The pieces of axle are wedged in the BB area, so frame and cranks will be sent off to Cannondale for them to inspect. Anyone seen this before?

That's new. I've installed, worked on, and seen a lot of SI and SISLs and this is a first. They'll take care of it...

Thanks Starnut, I was hoping you'd comment.
I'm sure they will sort it out. The guys at the local Cannondale dealer couldn't believe it either, and like you, have never seen one fail like this. I know these cranksets are meant to be hard as nails so maybe I'm more powerful than I thought....

i make the same comment as starnut.

could it have been a circlip malfunction and possibly a BB malfunction, rather than a spindle? thats crazy to think the spindle broke.

take pics once its out. ive got to see this.

Wow. Don't have much to contribute, other than to say that that's the first failure of this type i've seen. I think a mountain biker bent a crankarm at the pedal interface once...but that's it. I've seen crankarms that practically have holes in them from crashes/impact that are still going strong...the things just don't let up generally.

definitely would like to see teh spindle, or have one of our forensics specialists figure out this puzzle...

Realised I forgot to post an update on this. Cannondale replaced the broken spindle under warranty. The crank arms and frame were undamaged when they inspected them. All well now. Very impressed with the customer service from Cannondale, and it was all sorted out very quickly.

Any chance that you got a pic of the thing out of the bottom bracket before they scooted away with it that you could post?

A local shop guy here was riding his cx9 in the shop lot and did the same thing. I will see if I can find a pic.

Will they take care of the funeral if the crankset was at fault and caused a death?

I have seen two failures with the carbon cranks that were recalled, but none with the Hollowgram cranks
