I think the J one stands for Japanese and the other stands for Italian.

Different tapers:
JIS has a "tip size" of 12.65 mm and a 2° gradient angle
ISO is a little smaller and has a 1.8° angle
JIS means Japanese Industry Standard and ISO means International Organization for Standardization
Nowadays the ISO standard is only used by Campagnolo, most other use JIS square tapers.

i looked in to this a while back as im not oversure the info i found agrees with you... i seem to remember the info i found claimed european & japanese tapers were the same angle 2 degrees but the taper tips were different.... european 12.1 mm japanese 12.3 mm.....
i think stronglight & TA also use the european taper
