My guess it's a transmitter unit for his Powertap data.

Could also be his HR. They are putting HR data transmitters on certain riders during stages. Gives the commentators something to comment on when the race is boring. I read the ongoing stages at work on cycling news during the major races and they will always comment on so-and-so's HR during climbs or sprints.

he didn't have a powertap rearhub...
maybe for his HR but i dont think so because they never showed it on tv
behind his saddle there was something white that looks like a thing to collect solar energy
strange!
but what is all this for?

It's a 'lipstick' camera plus a transmitter.

Yup, it's a camera. Nothing new thought, it's done all the time :)

If he wasn't using a Powertap rear hub maybe they just left it on his bike just like they did the computer head unit for ballast

the swiss television who produces the pictures of the tour de suisse asked him to install this camera which weights around 300 grams because they thought rast is going to be the last man in front of the team's sprinter aurelien clerc in the bunch sprint and the camera would have made pics looking back from the rear brake. but things went different as rast spent the whole day alone in the front...

You sure about the power tap hub? He has a cycle ops power tap head unit on there. (ie. yellow computer mounted on stem)

I don't know if this has proven to be true in practice, but phonac reported this winter that they were going to be racing and training with the power tap on everything. (everything but the tt disk.) They were building up zipp wheels with the SL hub and DT-Swiss spokes, and the front with a DT-Swiss hub and spokes.

I saw the head unit as well, but I don't know about the hub for sure. The other guys above were pretty positive that the thing under the seat was a camera however.

The race is on TV right now. I'll see if can detect the hub today.

...just saw some footage from his camera 8) It's aimed forward slightly above the left side of his front wheel.
