Is this possible and has anyone actually used such a combination? Or really anything smaller than a 39 on a standard 130 BCD crank?

38T is the smallest on a 130BCD spider, to my knowledge...TA makes them...I run them on all my cranks. shifts fine with a 53T DA big ring, and is within the recommended tolerances of the DA Front derallieur

Thats only going to work on a compact, not sure what the shift would be like between a 36 and a 53 though?

38t is definitely the smallest you can physically get on a standard 130bcd crankset and most chainring manufacturers supply them. I think a couple of crank sets aren't able to run anything less than a 39 due to their construction. I

52/36 can be had in 110mm BCD ("compact") chainrings. A few companies make 53t 110mm BCD rings but they are rare. 53/36 would be 1 over the max difference spec for most road front derailleurs. I'd use a chain catcher for that as the chain is likely to come off the inner ring on downshifts.

I'm running 52/36 on my THM's. Would have preferred 50/36 but the frame and FD combo does not cater for 50T.

It works perfectly fine, should work with the 53T too but would suggest adding a chain catcher as the drop off is really quite a distance. Just in case.

I'm just wondering because I just got a new 130 BCD crankset and I wouldn't mind a smaller inner chain ring for climbing, but I don't want to give up my 53 outer for the flats and descents.

Oopss... should have stated that I'm running a 110 BCD.

Its not possible to run a 36 on a 130BCD. It won't fit. The smallest you can fit is possibly a 38. And note, it doesn't fit on all cranksets. You need to check around first. Some 130BCD crank spiders do not have enough clearance for a 38T

While not really 'every-day' riding set-ups, you can run a 53/34 chainring combination on a 110 bcd. Vino sometimes runs 53/34 x 11-28! I think you would have to be careful in your shifting choices, though!
