Hey
I need some recommendations regarding an expansion / compression plug that stays in the steerer when torqued probably. I have a problem with the one that I have at the moment, it keeps slipping whenever I tighten the top cap, and therefore I can not get rid of the play in the headset. Its a Carbon steerer 1 1/8, ID of 23
Is there some better than others at gripping? Or should I try to use some sort of liquid to get it to stay? (I have tried carbon assembly compound paste with no success).
The one that I have at the moment is this one

I picked up a Reynolds compression plug, and it as not slipped. My stem is a PRO Vibe alloy properly torqued. Previous problem plugs includes FSA, older Reynolds, Easton, and Kuota.

Try a short length of old inner tube around the expander, the rubber squished between the outside of the expander and the inside of the steerer should provide enough grip to properly tension your headset

I've used this one also; on my road bike for over 5 years and tons of miles. Never a problem since installed.

Using my Gum Gum no my Javelin with no issues.
Seems a bit flimsy, but has worked thus far.

I love the ExtraLite; I have them on at least 3 of my bikes and have never had one slip. (I'm not saying this just because we sell them, either -- I truly think they're great.)

Did you try to clean the steerertube before assembly? ...I use a very similar expander as the one you use (Pro-Lite), and I cleaned my carbon steerertube with a discbrake-cleaner and wiped it completely dry. At the touch of a finger it did actually seem a little greasy in there before but better after cleaning.
Worth a try, usually does the trick with seatposts that wants to slip too...

I don't claim to be an expert, esp. given the expertise on this forum, but perhaps my experience will be helpful to the OP and possibly others. Having only a few years ago bought a new carbon road bike after having stuck with the same steel Masi since 1973, the expander plug for a carbon fork was new technology for me. I ruined one and then had a local bike shop install a new one. This new one slipped, so I took it to an "expert shop" elsewhere in Europe. This expert shop tried three different expander plugs before getting one to fit snug.
My advice is to get the expander plug that fits your steering tube correctly. You may be smart to get a good mechanic to help you with this.
