Buy Cosmic Elites sub 2000g, a bargain and perfect rolling wheels, stiffer than any other, i ride them in winter

Speaking of bargains...

Chinese-made 25mm carbon rims. 1 x 18h. 1 x 24h. Claimed weight 200g each. Price US$90.00 each. Assuming they really weight 250g that is 500g for the pair and US$180.00.

American Classic Micro 58 front hub and 205 rear hub. 263g for the pair. MSRP US$394.00

42 Sapim C-Xray spokes. Approx 190g. Approx US$120.00

42 aluminum nipples. Approx 10g. Approx US$20.00

Totals. 963 grams and US$714.00

That is retail pricing. If I buy all the parts (except rims) on Ebay or somewhere similar I suspect I could build these wheels in the $500-600 range.

What do you guys think?

I think the closest you will come is a 2009 Easton EC90 SLX.
About 1k from ebay dealers, and probably about 1200 grams.

Where can I get chinese carbon rim at $90 each?

My friend is building a KOM + CX-ray + AM classic 20/24H wheelset and it weighs 479.5gr (rims) + 58+205gr(hubs)+211.3gr (spokes) + 13.8gr (nipples), total 967.6gr. If you can get a set of 250gr rims cheap you can build 990gr wheelset this way.

easton SLXs are notorious for being extremely overweight.

and you can find carbon rims for 90$ per rim (sold as pairs for 180$+shipping) on ebay, there was a link earlier in this thread. I couldn't find the low profile ones though.

Yup, they are over there claimed weight, which is why I said 1200 grams, that is pretty close to the actual weight (without skewers).
How do you know if the $90 ebay rims are reliable?? Lots of shitty products out there. I don't think I want to risk having a wheel collapse under me just to save 50 grams.
Besides, even though this is weight weenies, we all know aero trumps light weight.
I think I am going to buy a set of the Easton EC90 SL's. Similar depth to a 303, and still quite light, nice hubs with ceramics, sapim spokes. $1k.

Here is a link to the 250 gram, 20mm tubular rim I was looking at. The 200 gram rim is not on the website but was listed as a "coming soon" item in a catalog I received.

For 90$ I'll gladly take it to a facility that can test it until it breaks, then buy a new one.

unbranded 20mm 20/24 rims- 246g, 248g (400$)
soul prodigy v3 hubs- 288g (250$)

those Hubs look nice. The weight is quite low too. Do you know about their quality/durability?

How do you get 1050g? Shouldn't this be under 1000g with reasonable spoke/nipple choice? Adding up the weights you provided gives 752g, which leaves 247g for spokes and nipples while still coming in under 1000g. So if you used 44 DT Aerolite spokes at say 4.34g/spoke, that would still leave 27g for nipples. If you used alu nipples at 0.31g each, that would bring the total weight to 987g, which allows for some error in the weights while still coming in under 1000g. Of course, if you used brass nipples at 1g/nipple, that would bring the total weight to 1017g.

Using alu nipples, and figuring less than $350 for spokes, nipples, and build cost, that should produce the sub 1000g sub $1000 wheelset. Am I missing something?

Nice farm_lim. I'm looking at doing a similar build.

Concerned about the extra weight of the hubs, as they are listed as 274g and it will be pretty tight already to go under 1000g...

Can you please weigh both hubs separately?

Combined weight of hubs and rims is 782g, so only leaves 218g for spokes and nipples.

Would Alloy nipples be okay for such a build and a rider weight around 75kg using CX Rays rather than DT Aerolites? These wheels for me will be only special occassion wheels.
