Note to all... I tried Kool Stop brake pads (for carbon rims) and they squeal like cats in a blender. I was actually embarassed coming to intersections and stop signs.

Indeed it will
I have just recently placed orders for two sets of Soul Prodigy V3 hubs, a pair of Stan's Alpha 340 rims, and a pair of 310g 50mm matte UD carbon tubular rims from Xiamen Far Sports (they also have a 215g 20mm tubular rim). The tubular wheelset should be close to 1000g, and the tubeless should be under 1200g.
The tubular wheelset might be built up in a month when the rims arrive, but the hubs for the tubeless set will take a couple months since they need to be custom drilled 28/28.

Ok. My 20mm rims are on their way. I'm now choosing hubs (20h/24h). Here's my shortlist:
Tune (nice but a bit pricey for this build)
Soul Kozak (good weight, cheaper, possibly less reliable)
Soul Wheel Division (Cheaper, heavier)
American Classic (Light, cheapish)
C4
M5
I haven't made up my mind yet. Are there any good options I'm missing?

Absolutely, there are surprisingly a bunch of cheap light 20/24 hubs available from taiwanese OEMs:
Novatec Road Hubs are $115 for 76g / 245g
Token Accura TK195 Hubs are as cheap as $135 with steel bearings for 82g / 268g, more expensive for newer ceramic bearings which are 80g / 255g.
Circus Monkey Road Hubs are only on eBay for $123 and are 78g / 224g
I probably would have gotten the Circus Monkey hubs if I could have gotten them from sellers higher up the supply chain and gotten other colors / drillings / freehubs.

Soul Prodigy hubs seem to be the best for the money.
Why?
-Weight is 288g (accurately claimed) for the pair.
-Look at the specs: flange locations, bearings, bracing angles, etc:. These specs match better or very close to the top rated hubs as listed under the FWB epic hub review.
I really don't see anything better that compares at that price point, really. The aforementioned cheap sets are both heavier and have poorer specs.
Your hubs matter more than you realize.

Thanks for the help. I'm coming round to the Soul Prodigy. Not overly light but good for the price. Should (just) make a 1000g wheelset and will keep the cost down. I'm not too fussed if it's 10g over the magic kilo mark.

not really.
of course, I'll know more after I ride them..
but, they should be decently stiff.. no reason to think of them as climbing only.
I plan to use them for training wheels.. put a load of miles on them and enjoy their weight characteristics.

No.
These will essentially build out to the same wheelset that are Easton EC90 SLX.
http://www.eastoncycling.com/road/produ ... s/ec90-slx
You should ask Easton if those are suitable for going uphill only.
Then maybe ask your wheelbuilder if Lightweights (also ultra light) should only be used for climbing only... and then tell all the people who use them that they shouldn't use them on the flats, or downhill. Same with the Reynolds RZR, AX Lightness wheelsets, etc:.
Then again, same-ish rim, and people here are building for less than 1kg...
