Is it possible to get a quality wheelset under 1000 grams for under US$1000.00? If so, where? Doesn't have to be new...

Disc or rim brake? Sub 1000g disc wheelsets are few and far between and every set that I've seen has been pieced together by its owner and then built. They require extremely light (and thus expensive) hubs like tune and extralite.

You can look for some great deal on KOM wheelset (~1050gr), disassemble it, and reassemble with lighter DT rev spokes. That will result in a sub kilo wheelset under $1000, but will be flexy...

Retail... I am working on it. I hope to have some that are sub-1000 and sub 1000 retail. I will post them once I get them built

I think this is possible... although the rim source is the question.

Assuming that FFWD wheels get their rims from Gigantix, their 20mm rim should come it at 250g and ~$200 delivered from Asia.

Get some quality SOUL Prodigy hubs, at $200 and 275g.

That leaves you 225g and $200 for spokes.... certainly reasonable with Wheelsmith XR15s.

The FFDW wheels come in at 1050g with DT hubs. Shouldn't be a stretch to get them under 1000g w/o spending a lot of money. You just need to get an inside man to get you some rims from (I assume) Gigantix.

[EDIT] Rims can be sourced through Karbona apparently (although I could not find them)... see this thread.

Well, I guess what would make the question real for me and more valid is:

Durable Sub 1000g wheelset for sub $1000?

Good point regarding durability. These may not be ridden everyday, but they will be ridden regularly and have to stand up to New England roads and 165 pound rider weight. I just can't see spending 3000 to 5000 bucks on a wheelset when I've seen Lew/Tune/Pillar builds on eBay for $1200.00 . Of course, now that I have a little extra cash I can't even find a used set of wheels like that. (No offense to a couple weenies who have offered to sell me some nice wheels... just not quite what I'm looking for)

Add that they need to roll under regular use for far more than sub 1000 miles...

This is posted in the road forum, so OP must mean rim brakes unless otherwise noted.
More relevant question would be clincher or tubular. I assume OP menas tubular wheelset since he asks for sub 1 kg.

Yes... road tubular. Is a clincher even possible? Never mind. That can be a new thread.

It is possible. But not for sub-1000$
I would not be confident about the durability at all.

Just wanted to revisit this thread and see if there were any new developments out there...
